Wikipedia is an encyclopedia made with a wiki, which means that anyone can change the encyclopedia or create new articles.There are many different Wikipedias written in various languages — there are more than fifteen thousand articles in at least twenty of them. It is open content. Many people write the Wikipedias, and anyone can. It is based on an older internet encyclopedia named Nupedia.
The project started on January 15, 2001, by Jimmy Wales. It is part of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. In all languages combined, there are now over three million articles. More than one million of these are in the English Wikipedia, started on January 15, 2001.
The Simple English Wikipedia, was created on September 18, 2001 in order to let people who are learning English use Wikipedia. On December 18, 2003, the Simple English Wikipedia began using the MediaWiki software.
