During the French and Indian War, he captured a French fort but soon left because he was afraid that the french would attack. The fort that his men built was very bad and was quickly taken over by the French. George Washington was the American General during the American Revolution with the highest rank. He was a very important person in this war. He was also the leader at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. George Washington was best known as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. He is the only president who did not belong to a political party. His picture is shown on the one dollar bill and on the American quarter. He is known as the "Father of His Country". He died on December 14, 1799.
[edit] Early years
Before he was a General in the American Revolution, George Washington was a farmer on Mount Vernon. Later on he became a soldier, and in 1759 he married Martha Washington. He was the only leader of the early United States that freed all of his slaves when he died.
