Galician is a Romance Language that started on the old part of the Roman Empire called Gallaecia. Today, this same place is the north of Portugal and the Spanish province of Galicia.
Galician took words from many languages, like Arabic, Spanish, and Celtic.
The Galician of today comes from the Galician-Portuguese. Galician-Portuguese is another language, that is no more spoken, and it became two different languages: Portuguese and Galego. Galician-Portuguese was spoken in the Middle Ages.
Today, Galician is spoken just in Galicia (a part of Spain) and by some people in South America.
[edit] Is it a real language?
Some people say Galician and Portuguese are the same languages, because there are very few differences between them.
People that speak Portuguese and people who speak Galician can understand each other very well.
