HIStory: Past, Present and Future – Book I est un double album de Michael Jackson sorti le 20 juin 1995 sur le label Epic Records, division de Sony Music. Le concept de l'album s'appuye sur le jeu de mot 'his story' faisant allusion à la partie best-of de 15 titres sur le premier cd (History begins) et History, titre figurant sur le second cd, contenant lui 15 titres nouveaux ou jamais sortis auparavant (history continues).
L'album a été nominé pour plusieurs Grammy Awards en 1996 dont l'album de l'année, qu'il n'a d'ailleurs pas gagné. Depuis sa sortie en 1995, HIStory: Past, Present and Future - s'est vendu à plus de 18 millions de copies à travers le monde, et en fait ainsi le double album le plus vendu de l'histoire. [1].

HIStory fût le premier album dans lequel Jackson montra sa maitrise des instruments, jouant du piano, du synthesizer, de la guitare, et autres percussions sur l'album, de même qu'il assurera le chant et les choeurs. il fût également plus impliqué dans la production de l'album, en collaborant avec les producteurs Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Dallas Austin, Bill Bottrell and R. Kelly.
Sony Music a soutenu la promotion de l'album avec 30 millions de dollar en promotion et campagne marketing, le plus gros budget alloué à un album à ce jour. La campagne comprenait un ensemble de singles et clips vidéo, spots télévision et radio, une tournée mondiale et finalement un album de remixs.
Si chacun des albums de Jackson comprenait au moins un titre qui égratignait la presse, HIStory continues a un son plus amer et coléreux, plus personnel donc, car la production suit de peu les accusations de Jordan Chandler pour abus sexuels. Depuis "Scream" jusqu'à "Tabloid Junkie", Jackson critique la presse à scandale et ses lecteurs, le procureur qui l'a poursuivit. Il y expose son état d'esprit dans "Stranger in Moscow".

[modifier] "Scream"/"Childhood"
Le premier single "Scream"/Childhood", sorti en May 1995 comme un double double a-side single. "Scream" est un duo entre Jackson et sa soeur cadette Janet, et "Childhood" a été utilisé comme thème du film Free Willy 2. Les deux chansons sont supportées par un clip. Celui de Scream (le plus coûteux de l'histoire) est d'inspiration SF. Il raconte l'histoire de Michael et de sa Soeur, à bord d'un vaisseau en orbite autour de la Terre, qui tentent de fuire leur réalité. Ils hurlent tous els deux leur colère, en éspérant que cela s'arrête… Il remportera le Grammy Award du meilleur clip ainsi qu'un MTV Video Music Award pour la meilleure chorégraphie en 1995. "Childhood" s'inspirant de l'histoire de Peter Pan montre un Jackson chantant dfans une forêt avec des bateaux-pirate flottant au-dessus de lui.
Ce double single entre dans l'histoire, entrant directement en 5ème position du Billboard Hot 100, le meilleur démarrage pour un single à l'époque, battant un record vieux de 25 ans détenu par les Beatles avec leur single "Let It Be", qui était entré en sixième position en 1970. Le single restera dans les charts pendant 17 semaines, et au 31 juillet 1995, il est certifié disque de platine. Le single atteind la 3ème position en Angleterre, la 2ème en Australie et la 1ère en Nouvelle-Zélande, Finlande, Espagne, Hongrie, Italie, France, et dans l'Eurochart Hot 100.

Second single d'HIStory's, "You Are Not Alone", fût écrit et produit par R. Kelly et sort en août 1995. Il devint le premier single à atteindre directement la 1ère position du Billboard Hot 100, recevant un "Billboard Hot 100 Achievement Award" pour sa réussite. Le single frestera dans les charts américain pedant 20 semaines, et en huit semaines fut certifié platine en dépassant le million d'éxemplaire. Il atteind la 1ère place en Anfgleterre, Nouvelle-Zélande, Irelande, France, Suisse, et l'Eurochart (où il restera 6 semaines). Le clip vidéo est en celà controversé qu'il présente un Jackson pfratiquement nu et sa femme de l'époque Lisa Marie Presley.

"Earth Song" le troisième single extrait de l'album sort en November 1995, excepté aux Etats-Unis, où il est difusé en radio avec la chanson "This Time Around." En Angleterre, "Earth Song" démarre en numéro un et y reste 6 semaines. Se faisant, le single devient la chanson numéro de Noël dans ce pays. "Earth Song" restera 19 semaines dans les charts, et sera le plus gros hit anglais de Michael Jackson.
Le single sera numéro un en Allemagne, Suisse, Lettonie et l'Eurochart. Au total, il atteind le top 10 dans 16 pays européens. Aux Brit Awards de 1996, la chanson cause à nouveau une controverse. Jarvis Cocker proteste contre la performance de Jackson, prétendant que Jackson se prenait pour Jésus. Grâce à cette performance et l'altercation avec Cocker, "Earth Song" remonte dans les charts (de la 38ème à la 16ème place). Il s'en vend 3 millions de copies à travers le monde et en fait le le plus gros succès de l'album, et accessoirement le single le plus vendu de Jackson.

"They Don't Care About Us" 4ème single d'HIStory sort en avril 1996, et encore une fois attire la controverse - cette fois-ci pour des paroles jugées anti-sémites. Jackson est obligé de changer les paroles Jew me, sue me et kick me, kike me en do me, sue me et kick me, strike me afin que le single puisse être joué en radio et télés musicales. Le clip original, tourné en mars dans les rues de Rio de Janeiro au Brésil, n'est pas pas "entièrement satisfaisant", et une seconde version, la version "prison", est tournée plus tard. Pourtant cette nouvelle vidéo est, interdite dans de nombreux pays. Montrant un Jackson emprisonné, des images de bavures policières, et autres enfants affamés défilent au son de la musique. Un clip violent, qui sur MTV et VH1 ne sera diffusé qu'après 21h00.
En Angleterre, "They Don't Care About Us" atteind la 4ème place et reste dans le top 100 pendant 18 semaines, alors qu'en Italie et Allemagne il est numéro un. Ces résultats contrastent avec le Billboard 100 où le single ne dépassera pas la 30ème position même s'il y restera 13 semaines. Dans l'Eurochart, "They Don't Care About Us" atteind la place numéro 2, et y restera 8 semaine, comptabilisant 26 semaines de présence.

"Stranger In Moscow", sorti en novembre 1996, est le 5ème single. Comme "They Don't Care About Us" il est plus populaire en Europe qu'aux Etats-Unis. En Agnleterre, "Stranger In Moscow" atteind la 4ème place, et restera dans le top 100 pendant 16 semaines. Enespagne et Italie, il est numéro un, alors que dans l'Eurochart il atteind la 6ème place et cumulera 17 semaines de présence.

En juillet 1997, pendant la 2ème aprtie de la tournée HIStory, "HIStory (Tony Moran's History Lesson)" - une version remix de la chanson titre "HIStory", sort partout sauf aux Etats-Unis. Le titre est accompagné de "Ghosts", un titre extrait de l'album Blood On The Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix. Le signle débute en 5ème place en Angleterre, et restera 8 semaines. En France et en Italie, le single est respectivement 4ème et 3ème.

"Smile" est une reprise d'un titre de Charlie Chaplin en 1928, que Jackson a repris pour conclure HIStory. Elle devait sortir et être le dernier single dHIStory en octobre 1997Modèle:Fact. La sortie est annulée par Sony. (Quelques CD promotionnels et vinyls sont vendus sur eBay entre 550£ et 850£.
