Introduction

Association football, soccer, or simply football, is a team sport played between two teams each consisting of eleven players and is the most popular sport in the world. It is a ball game played on a rectangular grass field (or occasionally on an artificial pitch) with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into the opposing goal. The predominant feature of the sport is that players other than the goalkeepers may not use their hands or arms to propel the ball in general play. The winner is the team that has scored more goals at the end of the match.

The sport is known by many names throughout the English-speaking world, although football is the most common. Other names, such as association football and soccer, are often used to distinguish the game from other codes of football, since the word football may refer to several quite different games.

Football is played at a professional level all over the world and millions of people regularly go to a football stadium to follow their favourite team, whilst millions more avidly watch the game on television. A very large number of people also play football at an amateur level.

World Cup 2006

Final match. After a 1-1 draw following extra time, Italy defeats France 5-3 on penalties and wins its fourth World Cup title.
Third place match. Germany defeats Portugal 3-1.
France defeats Portugal 1-0 with a penalty kick that clipped the crossbar and crepped in from "Zizou" Zinedine Zidane and secures a place in the final match.
Italy defeats Germany 2-0 with both goals scored in extra time and secures a place in the final match.
France ends Brazil's winning streak 1-0 and completes the semi-finalists' list.
After finishing with a goalless draw following extra time, Portugal defeats England 3-1 on penalties, and advances to the semi-finals.
With two goals from Luca Toni, Italy beats Ukraine 3-0 and advances to the semi-finals.
After finishing with a 1-1 draw following extra time, Germany defeats Argentina 4-2 on penalties, and advances to the semi-finals. Klose scored Germany's only goal in the match and is still the competition's top scorer so far (5 goals).
France turns the tables against Spain 3-1 and completes the quarter finalists' list.
Brazil beats Ghana 3-0 and advances to the quarter finals; The defending champion set some historical records in this match; longest winning streak in World Cups with 11 wins; First team to score 200 goals in the World Cup and Ronaldo who scored Brazil's first goal, surpassed Gerd Müller as the top scorer in the World Cup's history (15 goals).
After finishing with a goalless draw following extra time, Ukraine defeats Switzerland 3-0 on penalties, and advances to the quarter finals. For the first time in any World Cup final, a team is eliminated without conceding a goal in open play.
Italy scores a penalty in the last minute of extra time to defeat Australia 1-0 and advance to the quarter finals.
Portugal defeats Netherlands 1-0 and advances to the quarter finals. For the first time in any World Cup final, four players are sent off.
England defeats Ecuador 1-0 and advances to the quarter finals.
Argentina scores a goal in extra time to defeat Mexico 2-1 and advance to the quarter finals.
Germany defeats Sweden 2-0 and advances to the quarter finals.

Aug 10: John Terry succeeds David Beckham as England's national team captain. Liverpool's Steven Gerrard is named vice-captain.
Aug 1: Steve McClaren takes over from Sven-Göran Eriksson as England's national team manager.
Jul 25: Italy's FIGC sports court reduces the punishments handed out to Italian clubs. Only Juventus are demoted to Serie B but they will start the season with a points deduction of seventeen instead of thirty. The decision to strip them of their last two Serie A titles is upheld. Fiorentina and Lazio are reinstated in Serie A with their point deductions increased from twelve to nineteen for Fiorentina and seven to eleven for Lazio. AC Milan's points deduction is reduced from fifteen to eight and they are allowed to play in the Champions League qualifying rounds.
Jul 14: Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio are relegated to Serie B after the sentence in the Serie A match fixing scandal. AC Milan remain in Serie A but will have a fifteen point penalty next season, and are expelled from the Champions League through having forty-four points deducted from the 2005-06 season's records. Juventus are stripped of the title for 2005 and 2006, expelled from the Champions League and will have a thirty point penalty next season. Fiorentina and Lazio will start the season with twelve and seven point penalties respectively. All are expected to appeal against the convictions.
Jul 14: The United States Soccer Federation announces a decision not to renew the contract of national team coach Bruce Arena.
Jul 12: After the Parliament of Greece amends a new sports law to address FIFA's objections regarding governance of the Hellenic Football Federation, FIFA lifts its ban on the Greece national team and Greek club teams.
Jul 12: Dallas Roma FC becomes the first USASA (non-league amateur) side to defeat a Major League Soccer team in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, beating CD Chivas USA 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Jul 3: FIFA suspends Greece from all international and club competition after interference by the country's government into the affairs of the Hellenic Football Federation.
