Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States. He was born on April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, Virginia. He is one of the founding fathers of the United States.
Thomas Jefferson was the main writer of the Declaration of Independence. He believed that it the government should be small. He thought that the only job of the government was to follow the Constitution. He was associated with the Anti-Federalists. They were a group who thought the Constitution gave too much power to the national government. During the ratification of the Constitution, he claimed to be on neither side. As president, he did not follow his beliefs when he sent navy ships to Algiers or when buying the Louisiana Territory from France. The Constitution did not give him the power to either of those things.
Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence. He is considered one of the greatest Unites States Presidents.
