James Madison (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836) was the fourth president of the United States. He was the leader of the U.S. from 1809 to 1817. He is called the father of the Constitution because he helped write a large portion of it. He was a short man, about 5 feet 4 inches. Before becoming president he was Thomas Jefferson's Secretary of State. He had two Vice Presidents. George Clinton and Elbridge Gerry. Both of them died before Madison's term ended.
