This isn't a talk page but it's a "project" page so we can use it for talk at present.
I'm not too fussed about changing the logo so I'm happy to chat about it. On my talk page BrianNZ said (more or less):
"What say that we get the text "The Free Enclopedia" on the logo translated to Maori. If a few of us agree, we can post a request on meta wiki, to have the logo changed to Maori text, reading
"WIKIPEDIA
"te MĀTĀPUNENGA UTUKORE."

- OK in principle, with MĀTĀPUNENGA definitely being OK because it's the only word for "encyclopedia" in Te Matatiki.
- "UTUKORE" (though straight from Te Matatiki) not ideal, because it has (I think) only the "no price/cost" meaning (free, gratis, amateur), whereas the intended meaning of "free" is more along the lines of "liberated, unrestricted". "Free" in sport is "pātea" (from "unencumbered, free from burdens"), but that's still close to the "no cost" meaning - something for nothing, a play that doesn't cost you a turn.
- One other matter that has crossed my mind at times is that some keen Maori linguist might want us to translate or transliterate (same as many other Wikipedias have done) WIKIPEDIA - the nearest transliteration might be "Wikiperia" or "Wikipiria". "Peri[a]" isn't listed in Te Matatiki or in Ngata (except as part of "Āperira"); but "Piri" is - it means "stick, adhere, cling, attach" - with "piripiri" having a modern meaning "velcro", of course, from the plant that inspired it, and "pipiri" meaning coherent.

My argument for changing the waitohu is that we are trying to build a Maori matapunenga. Most of the side bar links are already translated, to Maori; so the logical next step is to translate the logo.
Yes I do agree with Robins comments, before we do go ahead with anything; we need to get a good translation for "Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopaedia". And if we can, yes let’s see if Wikipedia can be translated, other languages wikipedia’s have translated names (and logos).
I proposed "WIKIPEDIA, TE MĀTĀPUNENGA UTUKORE." Only on the grounds that that is the current site notice.
Let’s have some discussion, on this, if you can think of a good translation, for "Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopaedia" than “WIKIPEDIA, TE MĀTĀPUNENGA UTUKORE.” Please list it here.
I’m not too fussed about changing the waitohu either; however I think that some proactive discussion on this topic will do some good.

BTW Any thought been given to the transliteration of Wikipedia, since there is no d in the M alphabet? The closest would be Wikipiria - I note that Hawaiian has "Wikipikia' which is the closest you can get in Hawaiian Kahuroa 22:54, 20 Hui-tanguru 2006 (UTC)
- Bit of a bastardised word - tack a transliteration of a Graeco-Roman ending onto a Hawaiian word meaning "fast". I guess if the haw: crowd can wear the idea we can.
