Hunter Stockton Thompson est un reporter et écrivain américain, né en 1939 (certaines sources indiquent : 1937 du fait qu'Hunter a menti sur son âge pour pouvoir rentrer plus tot dans une rédaction) à Louisville (Kentucky) et mort le 20 février 2005 à Aspen, Colorado.
Hunter S. Thompson invente et développe le principe de journalisme gonzo, qui consiste en une enquête ultra subjective faite de récits à la première personne, de rencontres et de prises de drogues, tout cela combiné à une plume féroce et hallucinée, et à un fort engagement politique. Il est l'ami notoire de Oscar Zeta Acosta, leur relation inspirera la rédaction de Las Vegas Parano, récit déjanté d'une quête du rêve américain à travers la prise de substances hallucinogènes.

Il débute une carrière de journaliste sportif en Floride. Il travaille ensuite plusieurs années en Amérique du Sud pour le National Observer, puis rentre aux États-Unis à cause d'une dysenterie.
Il participe (en vain) à des élections dans le but de devenir le shérif de Pitkin County.
Il publie Hell's Angels qui fait connaître ses méthodes et montre ce que sera le journalisme gonzo (ou en anglais gonzo journalism), même s'il finit cette expérience à l'hôpital après un différend avec les Hell's Angels au sujet de droits d'auteurs sur le livre.
L’adaptation au cinéma de Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas en 1998 (Las Vegas Parano en France), par Terry Gilliam, dans lequel Johnny Depp joue précisément le rôle du Dr. Duke, alter-ego de Thompson, le fait connaître du grand public.
Il met fin à ses jours avec sa propre arme à feu à son domicile d'Aspen le 20 février 2005.
