La Ligue australienne de football australien (Australian Football League en anglais, abrégé en AFL, également utilisé pour le jeu lui-même) fut fondée en 1989. Avant cette date, et depuis 1897, le championnat majeur australien avait pour nom Victorian Football League et regroupait uniquement des clubs de l'État de Victoria. L'AFL n'est qu'une évolution de la VFL.
La Grande Finale termine la saison. Cette partie décisive se dispute traditionnellement à Melbourne.
