Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a computer game follow-up to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, set in the same science fiction universe as Quake II and Quake 4, but the story serves as a prequel to Quake II. Unlike the previous Enemy Territory game, Quake Wars will be a commercial release rather than a free download. It will not include a single player mode. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is being developed by Splash Damage using a heavily modified version of id Software's Doom 3 engine and MegaTexture rendering technology, and is expected to be released early 2007.

[edit] Classes

[edit] Global Defense Force

GDF Backstory The Global Defense Force (GDF) is a paramilitary international rapid-reaction force formed from the various national armies and relief agencies in reaction to natural and terrorist disasters of the early 21st century. It is the only military force with the equipment, command structure, and mobility to defend Earth from the Strogg invasion. The GDF forces are humanity's best and brightest; they represent Earth's first and only line of defense against the pitiless Strogg raiders.

  • Soldier — This is the GDF's assault class. The Soldier can choose heavy weapons, such as the N93 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and N72 LAW Rocket Launcher. He also carries Fragmentation Grenades and the High Explosive Charge.
    • Weapons
      • N93 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG)
      • N72 LAW Rocket Launcher
  • Medic — The GDF medical specialist provides a support and combat role. He heals and revives team mates by dispensing health packs and using his Defibrillator pads. The Medic can air-drop supply stations in the field.
    • Weapons
      • N80 Assault Rifle
  • Engineer — The Engineer is a support/defense class, constructing and repairing vehicles, deployables, and objectives (such as bridges and machinery). He also deploys and maintains defense turrets, such as the Anti-Personnel, Anti-Missile and Anti-Vehicle deployables. The Engineer carries the N22 Shotgun and multi-purpose mines.
  • Field Ops — The GDF's Fire Support specialist, the Field Ops can deploy Fire Support guns in the field and designate targets for them. His deployables include the Artillery Gun, Guided Rockets, and Strategic Hammer Launcher. He can also call in Air-Strikes and dispenses ammunition to his squad mates.
    • Weapons
      • N80 Assault Rifle
      • N5 Machine Pistol
  • Covert Ops — The GDF's Covert Operative specializes in stealthy infiltration, sniping, electronic sabotage, and reconnaissance. Rangers can use their PDAs to hack and disable enemy deployables, and deploy 3rd Eye cameras to spy on the enemy and relay their locations to his squad mates.
    • Weapons
      • N38 Sniper Rifle
      • Smoke Grenades

[edit] Strogg

Strogg Backstory The Strogg are a barbaric race of telepathic alien cyborgs bent on universal domination to satisfy their dependence on the food-fuel known as Stroyent. The Strogg cannot be reasoned with or dissuaded; they are committed to the annihilation of any form of life in their path. Strogg victims not mulched into Stroyent are forced to undergo Stroggification -- a process of cybernetic augmentation and neurological hacking which removes their self-will and transforms them into ambulant weapons-drones, pliant to the will of the Supreme Strogg, the Makron. (See main article: Strogg.)

  • Aggressor — carries the Hyperblaster or Obliterator Bosonic Orb weapon, Shrap grenades and the explosive Plasma Charge.
  • Technician — carries a Lacerator and supplies his teammates with Stroyent, gained from corpses, that serves as health and ammunition for the Stroggs. Additionally, he is able to deploy forcefield emitters and turn a GDF trooper corpse into a mobile spawn point.
  • Constructor — carries a Nailgun or a modified Lacerator with a built-in Grenade Launcher. Repairs dynamic objectives and deploys anti-personnel and anti-vehicle turrets. Also has a Repair Drone, an AI-based automatic repair tool that will heal nearby damaged Strogg vehicles and return to the Constructor afterwards.
  • Oppressor — carries a rapid-firing Lacerator, deploys and calls in the Plasma Mortar, Rail Howitzer, and Orbital Laser.
  • Infiltrator — carries a railgun for sniping, plus has Bio-Electric Pinch Bombs used to stun opponents. The Infiltrator can then possess the bodies of fallen GDF players and use them for sabotage or espionage purposes. He can also use a camera drone to spy on the enemy.

[edit] Weapons

[edit] Global Defense Force

  • N93 Machinegun or GPMG (Soldier) — can be deployed by a soldier and made usable for other classes.
  • N72 LAW Rocket (Soldier)
  • N5 Machine Pistol (Field Ops)
  • N22 Shotgun (Engineer)
  • Land Mines (Engineer)
  • Proximity Mines (Engineer)
  • N80 Assault Rifle – scope or grenade attachments (Medic, Field Ops)
  • N38 Sniper Rifle (Covert Ops)
  • Smoke Grenades (Covert Ops)

[edit] Strogg

  • Lacerator (several classes)
  • Lightning Pistol (Opressor)
  • Hyperblaster (Aggressor)
  • Obliterator (Aggressor)
  • Bosonic Orb (Aggressor)
  • Railgun (Infiltrator)
  • Biolectric Pinch Bomb (Infiltrator)
  • Nailgun (Constructor)
  • EMP Charge (Constructor)

Strogg weapons do not need to be reloaded, but they run hot while shooting. In addition to the ones listed above, all classes will likely carry secondary weapons such as handguns and knives. It is possible that the lightning pistol and N5 machine pistol will play this role.

[edit] Vehicles

[edit] Global Defense Force

  • Husky Quad Bike — The Husky Quad Bike is fast and manuverable. It can only carry one player and has no armour but this is countered by the fact that it can traverse even the harshest of terrain and reach areas that are out of bounds for other vehicles.
  • Badger Jeep — The GDF's ubiquitous reconnaissance and light-raider, the Badger 4x4 is lightly armored and armed with only a single machinegun, but it enjoys excellent speed and maneuverability. The Badger's cabin seats a driver and a gunner (either can operate the machinegun remotely), with space in the open rear for three more soldiers--two sitting on the tailgate and one standing, operating the machinegun manually.
  • Trojan APC — The Trojan Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) is the no frills workhorse of the GDF. This APC can carry 4x players as well as a driver across land, water and up small rocky cliffs. The Trojan has a single mounted MG.
  • Titan Tank — The Titan Tank is the beast of the GDF’s vehicles. It has a huge cannon and is heavily armoured. This vehicle has 3 player positions; 1x driver, 1x tank gunner and 1x MG Gunner.
  • Anansi Gyrocopter — The Anansi is both highly manoeuvrable and heavily armed. The general purpose FAFF rockets and the front mounted MG will make light work of enemy foot soldiers and un-armoured vehicles. When it comes to armour the Anansi carries anti-armor HAW missiles which will dissuade even the heaviest vehicle.
  • Buffalo Transport The Buffalo is the GDF's lumbering flying bus, specializing in vertical assault and combat-reinforcement missions. The Buffalo is flown by a single pilot and carries up to four fully equipped GDF troops who can dismount or parachute from the open rear cabin. Armament is restricted to a chin-mounted machinegun turret and two door-machinegun mounts.
  • Mobile Command Post The massively armored Mobile Command Post is an all-in-one command bunker, radar post, and missile launcher. Once driven into position and deployed, the MCP dominates the surrounding area, effectively claiming that territory for the GDF. The MCP acts as a mobile launcher for the strategic strike missile--a devastating, short-range bunker-buster that's capable of blasting open even the most fortified of Strogg strongpoints. Many GDF operations require securing or constructing a route down which the MCP can be escorted from a safe rear area into SSM range of a Strogg-held objective. The driver has a bow-mounted machinegun; an optional gunner can operate a roof-mounted minigun to deter infantry or aerial attack.

[edit] Strogg

  • Icarus Hover Pack — The Icarus transforms player mobility, by augmenting them with twin anti-gravity repulsors. It uses short-burst thrusters to gain altitude, allowing it to pass obstacles at speed.
  • Hog Truck — The Strogg’s battlefield scout vehicle has a devastating ram charge attack. It is fast and mean and carries a driver and gunner, although a single player can both drive, point and fire the onboard fast-firing anti-personnel weapon.
  • Desecrator Hovertank — Long, low, heavily armed and heavily armored, the Desecrator is a floating nightmare on land, resembling a loathsome, segmented insect-turned-weapon. Mounting a devastating rail cannon in its turret and a heavy lacerator in its hull, the Desecrator can also hunker down in siege mode, sacrificing mobility for increased firepower. While the Desecrator can be operated by a single player, maximum effectiveness requires both a pilot and gunner.
  • Goliath Heavy Walker — The massive Goliath walker is a terrifying sight on the battlefield. Its articulated legs afford it excellent mobility over all surface types, allowing it to traverse difficult, sloping terrain and make sudden, unexpected, lethal appearances. At a distance, the Goliath is a lethal opponent with twin plasma cannons and a heavy lacerator, although its slow rate of turn leaves it vulnerable to determined short-range attack. The Goliath can also hunker down in siege mode to form a turret, reducing its silhouette and offering a smaller target.
  • Hornet Flyer — A nightmarish, buzzing peril, the hovering Hornet is a heavily armed threat to infantry with its heavy lacerator, vehicles with its "strocket" missiles, and aircraft with its light plasma cannon. The Hornet is only lightly armored, however, and while the four vectored antigravity repulsors let it hover over a target, they also make it a conspicuous target. The Hornet can be operated by a single player, but it's most effective with a pilot maneuvering it and a gunner operating its weapons.

Wheels, ammo packs, and other objects can be shot to disable a vehicle.

Every vehicle can be fully controlled by one player, but is more powerful when controlled by more players. For example, the tank's and the walker's drivers can fire the main gun in a moderate angle around the direction that the tank is facing, but it can only fire in a full 360° when one cannon operator is onboard.

Whether or not one faction can control the enemy's vehicles has not yet been decided.

[edit] Deployables

[edit] Global Defense Force

  • Anti-Personnel Turret - called in by the Engineer, will automatically target enemy infantry. Can also be manned by a player.
  • Anti-Vehicle Turret - called in by the Engineer, will automatically target enemy vehicles and aircraft. Can also be manned by a player.
  • Anti-Missile Turret - called in by the Engineer, will automatically target incoming enemy fire support. Cannot be manned by a player.
  • Artillery - called in by the Field Ops, who then designates targets for it. Fires a long, staggered salvo of rounds to suppress the target area.
  • Rocket Artillery - called in by the Field Ops, who then designates targets for it. Fires a more rapid burst of rounds intended to damage and clear armored targets such as vehicles and deployables.
  • Hammer Missile Launcher - called in by the Field Ops. Explodes in mid-air above the target area, inflicting massive casualties.
  • Radar - called in by the Covert Ops. Provides coverage of the nearby area, highlighting enemy infantry and vehicles on the command map.

[edit] Strogg

  • Anti-Personnel Turret - called in by the Constructor. Functions similarly to the GDF turret.
  • Anti-Vehicle Turret - called in by the Constructor. Functions similarly to the GDF turret.
  • Shield Turret - called in by the Constructor. Fires strands of arcing energy which destroy incoming fire support.
  • Rail Howitzer - called in by the Oppressor. Fires large kinetic slugs over a wide target area.
  • Plasma Mortar - called in by the Oppressor. Launches balls of plasma into the target area, which splash on impact causing damage to anything nearby.
  • Strategic Strike Gun - a precursor to the "Big Gun" in Quake II. Fires an arcing ball of energy across the map, causing massive damage to the target.
  • Psi-Radar - called in by the Infiltrator. Detects and tracks troops and vehicles, marking them on Strogg players' HUD maps.

[edit] MegaTexture

Main article: MegaTexture

MegaTexture is a texturing technique, developed by John Carmack at id Software, which is used in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars that promises to eliminate common texture bugs and glitches found in previous games. This technology will allow maps to be totally unique, without any repeated terrain tiles. Battlefields are rendered to the horizon without any fogging, with over a square mile of terrain at inch-level detail, while also providing terrain type detail that defines such factors as bullet hit effects, vehicle traction, sound effects, and so on. Each megatexture is derived from a vast 32768 x 32768 pixel (1024 megapixel) image, which, while taking up around 6GB in its raw form, can be compressed to take up only 8mb of video ram.
