The following is a list of characters featured in the American animated television series The Simpsons.
Characters are only listed once, normally under the first applicable subsection in the list; very minor characters are listed with a more regular character they are associated with. Though characters from Halloween episodes are included, these episodes do not form part of the show's continuity; thus characters only featured in one of these episodes do not inhabit the Springfield of the other shows. Subsections are ordered by size and ongoing relevance to the show.

- Mona J. Simpson, Homer Simpson's mother. Is seen mostly in flashback and is rarely seen. Faked her death when she was sent to prison. (1995 (Mother Simpson), 2003 (My Mother the Carjacker))
- Jacqueline "Jackie" Bouvier, Marge, Patty & Selma's mother. Is rarely seen. Nearly married Grampa and Mr. Burns.
- Clancy Bouvier, Marge's father, seen only in flashbacks and believed dead due to a freak roller coaster accident. He was employed as a male flight attendant before it was common. Smokes a cigar.
- Selma Bouvier Terwilliger Hutz McClure Stu, one of Marge's sisters, a twin to Patty. Works at the DMV with Patty.
- Ling Bouvier, Selma's daughter, who was adopted from China (2005 Goo Goo Gai Pan). Likes to feel Homer's eyes.
- Patricia "Patty" Bouvier, the other of Marge's sisters, a twin to Selma. She was proposed to in the episode Principal Charming by Seymour Skinner, but rejected the proposal. Later admitted being gay. Works at the DMV with Selma.
- Herbert "Herb" Powell, Homer's half-brother. Was once a millionaire owner of a car company until he let Homer design a car. (1991 (Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?) and then later rekindled his fortune thanks to Maggie 1992 (Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes?))
- Gladys Bouvier, Marge's deceased aunt. Never married, no children, but says that her chips that resemble famous celebrities were like children to her.
- Abbie Simpson, Homer's English older half-sister from Abe's liaison with an English woman during WWII. Looks a lot like Homer.
- Amber, Homer's Vegas wife, died of an overdose in front of the "Don't stand up on this rollercoaster" sign.
- Maggie Junior, Maggie's daughter (in one episode set in the future)
- Uncle Arthur, Bart's rarely spoken-of uncle who put his "Shoot 'em all and let God sort 'em out" theory into practice one grey December morn. It took 75 federal marshals to bring him down. The context suggests that he comes from Marge's side of the family.
- "Uncle Hubert", a Simpson relative whose funeral the family attended in the Tracey Ullman short "The Funeral".
- Uncle Tyrone, Homer's miserable old uncle who lives in Dayton, Ohio. Judging from his age and appearance, he is most likely Abe's brother. The family apparently visits him during his birthday, but other than that, he has never been seen. He appeared in the episode "Catch 'em If You Can"
- Marge also has at least one uncle, with whom she had to share her diary.
- One of Marge's grandmothers had a drinking problem, as stated on Homer's Phobia
- Homer's cousin Frank. He later became Francine, joined a cult, and then went by the name Mother Shabooboo.
- Great Aunt Hortense. The Simpsons were her only living relatives and so stood to inherit her entire estate. Instead they received $100 each and the rest went to Ann Landers.
- Cyrus Simpson, Abraham Simpson's older brother. Cyrus crashed his fighter into Tahiti in World War II's Pacific Theatre during a kamikaze raid. He has 15 wives. It is unclear whether he really exists, given the nature of the episode surrounding him.
- "Hick cousins", who are related to the Simpsons because their dog is the brother of Santa's Little Helper. They are actually more urbane than the Simpsons, despite slight Southern Accents.
- Kang, Maggie's alien "father" who became such when Marge was abducted and inseminated in an unspecified way in (Treehouse of Horror IX)
- Hugo, Bart's evil former Siamese twin. It is then revealed that Bart himself is the evil twin. (Treehouse of Horror VII)
- Various relatives seen. All Simpson men are failures and resemble Homer. Jobs held by male relatives include CEO of unsuccessful shrimping company, shooting birds at the airport and stepping in front of cars to sue the drivers. Simpson women are intelligent and successful, one is a doctor and another is an architect while a third is a successful seller of bunk and trundle beds. Several of these relatives, including the female doctor, are briefly seen at Uncle Tyrone's birthday party in "Catch 'em If You Can."
- Great Uncle Boris, recently deceased relative of the family who left the will to his house which is supposedly "haunted."

- Snowball, cat (deceased).
- Snowball II cat (1988-present), (various cats have been named Snowball II)
- Santa's Little Helper, Greyhound (1989-present), credited as Santos L. Halper in the episode The Canine Mutiny. Rescued from an angry owner at the dogtrack in the first full-length Simpsons episode.
- Mr. Teeny, Krusty's monkey. From Brazil. It appears that there have been several monkeys named Mr. Teeny over Krusty's showbusiness career, who Krusty keeps stuffed when they are deceased, replacing them with new ones. Mr. Teeny has been shown to drive a limousine and smokes cigars.
- Laddie, rough collie, super-dog, male version of Lassie mail ordered from Vermont, owned by Bart, now a police dog.
- Hungry Hungry Hippo, hippo the Simpsons met in Africa that is afraid of water.
- Mining chimps, owned by Jane Goodall who she forced to dig and find diamonds for her.
- Fake turtle Bart said crawled into a family's basement window.
- Unshown turtle, ate Homer's wedding ring.
- Princess, pony, owned by Lisa, now belongs to stable-owner.
- Duncan (Furious D), racehorse, owned by Homer and Bart.
- Blinky - Three-eyed fish rescued from nuclear plant waters. Unknown whether it is alive or deceased, as when Mr Burns goes to consume the fish it suddenly begins to shake and wobble as if it were still clearly alive and well (although this may be a sign of mutated/unappealing flesh), cooked by Marge, partially consumed by Mr. Burns.
- Stampy, elephant, owned by Bart after he won him in a gag radio promotion. Now living with other elephants in an animal refuge.
- Jub-Jub, iguana, owned by Selma, inherited from Aunt Gladys Bouvier.
- Chirpy Boy & Bart Junior, Bolivian tree lizards, owned by Bart, now escaped and wild. Apparently mostly prey on pigeons in Springfield, although they eat birds in general.
- Mojo, helper monkey, owned by Grampa (for a few seconds), Homer (and Prof. Frink).
- Pinchy, lobster, owned by Homer (deceased - accidentally cooked in bath - consumed by Homer).
- Unnamed, screamapillar, an endangered lepidoptera.
- Goldie, a goldfish that lived from August to October.
- Snuffy, hamster owned by Lisa (deceased).
- Variously named (Rover, Fido, Rex, Spot, Rover II, Fido II, Rex II, Cleo, Dave, Jay, Paul, Bradford, Dave II, Jay II, Paul II, Bradford II, Sleepy, Dopey, Grumpy, Donner, Blitzen, Grumpy II, King, Prince and the dog formerly known as Prince) 25 true-bred greyhounds, offspring of Santa's Little Helper and "Tex" O'Hara's She's The Fastest.
- Variously named, a few greyhound/poodle mixed-breeds, offspring of Santa's Little Helper and Dr. Hibbert's poodle Rosa Barks.
- Ozmodiar, a tiny green alien that only Homer can see (in parody of The Great Gazoo on The Flintstones). Appeared in Episodes The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase and HOMR.
- Mr. Porky, Homer's potbelly pig referred to in the Behind the Laughter episode.
- Peruvian Fighting Frog, owned by Bart but got in altercation with Milhouse's Peruvian Fighting Frog en route to show and tell (from "Brake My Wife Please" ep.1420). Fighting style is slap fighting.
- Turtle, given back to Bart "Alive and well" after winning a hockey game in "Lisa On Ice".
- Matey, a female American Bullfrog owned by Bart, only ever seen in Bart vs. Australia. Left to roam in the Sydney International Airport fountain, Bart promised to collect him before he went home, was unable to do so. Frog was therefore left to mate and to harvest on the various crops that Sydney has to offer. Bullfrogs described by locals as a "Chazwazzers".
- Nibbles, the hamster whom Homer, Bart and Milhouse (and the three nerds from Springfield U) launch into space. Also his wife and two (living) children (the other three were eaten by his wife). May also be Nibbles, a hamster owned by Principal Skinner who "chewed through his ball-sack."
- Cinnamon, childhood pet guinea pig of Marge, died after chewing through extension cord.
- A "murder" of crows, Homer befriended them by killing their enemy, a scarecrow created by Marge.
- Bart Jr.,another bullfrog in "Girls Just Want To Have Sums".
- Superdude, Hamster (deceased) Hamster belonging to Springfield Elementary School. Crushed by his water dispenser.
- Lumpy, Snake belonging to Springfield Elementary School.
- She's the Fastest, adopted racing dog, later breeding with Santa's Little Helper.
- Unnamed turtle (deceased). A dead turtle that Bart had found. Homer had agreed to hold it, while receiving electro-convulsive therapy in an attempt to revive it.

- Nedward "Ned", father, owner of Leftorium.Has a very strong belief in God. His house was once destroyed in a hurricane.
- Maude, mother (deceased) (1990-2000). Fell to her death after being hit by a T-shirt bazooka at the top of the Speedway seating section. Occasionally seen since as dwelling in heaven.
- Rod, son, nicknamed "Nim-Rod" by Bart Simpson.
- Todd, son, nicknamed "Nim-Todd" by Bart Simpson.
- Grandma Flanders (seen only twice: once around the time of Lisa's birth, once also in the episode when Bart & Lisa move in with the Flanders due to Marge & Homer's poor parenting. Partially senile.)

- Milhouse's uncle, Army Black Hawk pilot, possibly court-martialed for inappropriately using a Black Hawk helicopter.
- Nana Van Houten, mother of Kirk and grandmother of Milhouse. Lives in an apartment on 257th Street. She has skin like a basketball.
- Grandpa Van Houten, divorced from Milhouse's grandmother. He owns an RV. He and his new wife travel the country searching for adventure. He won a chili cook-off in Beaumont, Texas.
- Sophie, Milhouse's grandmother, who lives in Tuscany, Italy . Taught Milhouse to speak Italian by beating him each time he spoke English.
- Bastardo, Milhouse's uncle, son of Sophie.
- Pyro (aka Chase), American Gladiator and as of September 2005 the former boyfriend of Luann, who was caught cheating on him with best friend Gyro.

- Dr. Julius Hibbert, Simpson family doctor, graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, laughs during operations, diagnoses, and just about everything else. It's not that he's demented, he's just a happy guy (1990-present). Dr. Hibbert's similarity to Bill Cosby's Heathcliff Huxtable character was played up in the show's early years, when the two series went head-to-head on Thursday nights; for instance, he was occasionally shown wearing colorful sweaters or spending time with his large, stable family and professional wife. This aspect of his character has since disappeared in recent years.

- Mindy Simmons, hired because of power plant's lack of female employees, formed a close friendship with Homer which tempted him almost to adultery, after which she reportedly "hit the bottle pretty hard" and lost her job at the plant.
- Marge Simpson, wife of Homer Simpson, worked at the plant for extra money - was immediately hired because Lisa elaborated on her CV.

- Mike Scioscia, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Steve Sax, Ozzie Smith, Wade Boggs, Ken Griffey, Jr., Darryl Strawberry and José Canseco, ringers for the plant softball team who were given token jobs at the plant. (Don Mattingly is cut because he didn't shave his "sideburns". Steve Sax is serving three consecutive life sentences. José Canseco was busy saving a woman's possessions from her burning home. Ken Griffey Jr. was diagnosed with gigantism. Ozzie Smith appeared to have fallen off of the face of the earth. Wade Boggs is left unconscious on the floor of Moe's Tavern. Roger Clemens is hypnotized to think he is a chicken. Mike Scioscia is incapacitated from radiation poisoning. Strawberry was the only one who wound up playing.)
- Canary M. Burns, a canary who is the official head of the plant so Charles M. Burns would not get into trouble if there was unlawful activity there. Now living in the Canary Islands.
- Unnamed dog, is trained to abort the core destruct sequence when Homer presses the button while napping.
- Unnamed manatee, posed as Homer while he took his wife on vacation. He nearly died of dehydration, but fortunately, Mr. Burns and Smithers were able to keep him hydrated (by washing him like a car).
- Queenie, the chicken that took the place of Homer for a short time. Homer then gave her a good 'home' upon returning.
- Unnamed brick, tied around a lever to replace sickly Homer
- Several hundred robots also work at the plant. Homer had to fire several dozen robots due to budget problems.
