Der New York Film Critics Circle Award ist ein Filmpreis, der seit dem Jahr 1935 jährlich von der Filmkritikervereinigung New York Film Critics Circle vergeben wird.

Der New York Film Critics Circle entstand 1935 als Reaktion auf eine Reihe von Preisentscheidungen bei Oscar-Verleihungen, die von den Filmkritikern im Osten der USA allgemein beanstandet wurden. Sie warfen der Oscar-Jury insbesondere Abhängigkeit von den kalifornischen Filmstudios und vom Partikulargeschmack Hollywoods vor.

Der Filmpreis, den der New York Film Critics Circle seit 1935 alljährlich verleiht, gilt als eine der höchsten Auszeichnungen, die ein Film oder ein Filmkünstler in den USA erhalten kann. Gegenwärtig gehören der Organisation 29 Filmkritiker New Yorker Tageszeitungen, Wochenzeitungen und Zeitschriften an. Sie treffen sich alljährlich im Dezember, um unter den Filmen, die im Verlaufe des Jahres herausgekommen sind, ihre Preisträger zu ermitteln und bekannt zu geben. Die Preisverleihung folgt jeweils im Januar.
Der New York Film Critics Circle Award wird in folgenden Kategorien verliehen:

- Bester Darsteller – Beste Darstellerin (seit 1935)

- Bester Dokumentarfilm/nicht-fiktionaler Film (seit 1980)
- Bester Nachwuchsregisseur/Bester Debütfilm (seit 1989)
- Bester Animationsfilm (seit 2000)
In den USA werden im Ausland produzierte Filme vom Publikum kaum wahrgenommen. Um auf künstlerisch interessante ausländische Filme hinzuweisen, verlieh die Organisation ihren Preis bereits seit 1946 auch in der Kategorie „Bester ausländischer Film“. Mehrfach wurden ausländische Filme sogar mit dem Hauptpreis geehrt.

Obwohl der New York Film Critics Circle in seinen Preisentscheidungen vom Votum der Oscar-Jury immer wieder abgewichen ist (siehe Tabelle), stimmt die Philosophie der beiden Organisationen doch weitgehend überein. Bei der Auswahl des "besten Films" geht sowohl der New Yorker Kritikerpreis als auch der Academy Award in jeden zweiten Fall an einen Film, der aus einem der fünf großen Hollywood-Studios (MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, RKO, Warner Bros.) stammt. Auch wenn man kleinere Hollywood-Firmen wie Universal, Columbia, DreamWorks usw. in den Vergleich einbezieht, erweist sich der New York Film Critics Circle Award keineswegs als ein Filmpreis, der Hollywood-Produktionen vermeidet. So ist es wenig überraschend, dass der Preis, dessen Träger in jedem Jahr noch vor der der Oscar-Verleihung bekannt gegeben werden, als wichtige Vorprüfung für den Academy Award (Oscar) angesehen wird.
