Ian Gillan est né le 19 août 1945 à Hounslow, Londres. Lui-même et Roger Glover rejoignirent Deep Purple en août 1969 après avoir joué un moment avec Episode Six.Il le quitte en 1973 après l'album Who Do We Think We Are. De 1979 à 1982 il obtiendra un certain nombre de succès en solo.
Fin 1982, il remplace Ronnie James Dio dans Black Sabbath et enregistre avec le groupe l'album Born Again en 1983. Peu convaincu de sa présence au sein du combo de Birmingham, Ian le quitte courant 1983.
Avec Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Jon Lord et Roger Glover, Ian Gillan reforme Deep Purple en 1984 avec l'album Perfect Strangers. Après la sortie de l'album The House Of Blue Light (1987), le chanteur anglais quitte à nouveau le groupe et laisse sa place à Joe Lynn Turner avant de le réintégrer en 1992 avec The Battle Rages On.
