Vizianagaram district
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vizianagaram (also Vijayanagaram) is one of the three northern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, carved out of portions of Srikakulam and Vishakapatnam districts in 1979.
Vizianagaram is renowned for its veenas, a classical instrument made in the region. The district has a large tribal population. Timber is the main industry but the district remains very agricultural. The district had a population of 2,249,254 of which 18.33% were urban as of 2001.[1]
Lumber and produce is sent by rail or road to Visakhapatnam, the nearest city, which is highly instrumental in the district's economic fortunes.
In recent years, the district has seen a heavy investment in infrastructure, with a large irrigation project, the Thotapalli project planned, and road infrastructure upgrades in the works. In response to the population boom, several large towns have been incorporated as cities.
