DYK

Updated DYK query Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Cold Sunday, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Hi Ryan, and welcome! I noticed your article the other day, and since it was well-written (and seasonally appropriate), I nominated for DYK and now it's up :). 68.81.231.127 09:56, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Hate groups and new religious movements

May I ask you to change your vote on this VfD to a merge? As you say, the topic is important enough for Wikipedia to cover, but it was covered in the main Hate group article until someone moved it to its own article so that he could restore a disputed portion of the content without violating the letter of the three-revert rule. The controversy is over whether this important material will be covered by working out a consensus, or whether moving and subdividing articles will be treated as a legitimate way to dodge consensus. -- Antaeus Feldspar 23:22, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

More schools on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion

As of March 25, 2005, there are an additional (6) articles listed for deletion under the POV notion that schools are non-notable (even though this is invalid reasoning as per the Wikipedia deletion policy). Please be aware that the following schools are actively being discussed and voted upon:

In response to this cyclical ordeal, a Schoolwatch programme has been initiated in order to indentify school-related articles which may need improvement and to help foster and encourage continued organic growth. Your comments are welcome and I thank you again for your time. --GRider\talk 21:06, 25 March 2005 (UTC)

Bob McEwen

I've added footnotes to the Bob McEwen article and I wonder if you'd be willing to change your "conditional support" vote to an unconditional support? The vote is at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Bob McEwen. Thanks for your vote of confidence. PedanticallySpeaking 18:14, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

With your vote of support, the Bob McEwen article was featured this morning. Thanks for your vote. PedanticallySpeaking 16:39, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Bruce Johnson

I've done some work on this article per your comments on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Bruce Johnson. PedanticallySpeaking 18:54, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

I've posted this response at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Bruce Johnson to the concern about photos: "The press office of the Ohio Department of Development, of which Johnson is director, informs me by e-mail 'We do not have copyright on the photos.'" Crystal Lake Page in German

Hi RyanGerbil10 I was working on the German version of the Crystal Lake page. Took a lot of stuff from the english version and tried to translate it as good as I could. I'ts my first "own" article. You should know, I'm a poor beginner and don't know anything about wikipedia. I'm just registrated since today in Germany under RSABB. I'm a member of the Crystal Lake Sister City Commitee of Holzgerlingen. For that reason I'd like to convert the Crystal Lake page into the German wikipedia. On the English page I miss the Cardboard Boat Regatta stuff. I fear my English is not good enough to complete it by myself. As a beginner I also need some help, and, most of all, somebody who puts the pictures and the "Illinois+dot" map into the commons files, so that I can use them too without redundant uploading. By the way, I've seen you speak German, would't it be a challenge for you to translate the German "Holzgerlingen" page into the english version? I'd like to support you. Best Regards, RSABB.

Now you can reach me here: RSABB (talk) 03:41, (CET), 20 March 2006. Thanks again.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

Holzgerlingen Page

Hi Ryan, I'm sorry, but after you have done your great translation job I've added some stuff in history, traffic, local companies, theatre. Would you think it would be too much to ask you to update the english version? I promise that I will not add anything else. Probably some demographic datas, but I think that small text in English I can add by myself. It would be nice to hear from you. Bye --RSABB (Talk) 23:49, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ryan, I'm sorry, somebody has not agreed in using breaks (< br >) within my text. Instead of edit it he has simply replaced my text by an older version. Would you like to have a loock on it again? Thank you very much. Bye --RSABB (Talk) 01:35, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Still smirking

Hi, Ryan. Your lovely FAC comment on S. A. Andrée's Arctic balloon expedition of 1897 made me smirk a lot, and my friends tell me I've been acting conceited ever since. Thank you! :-) Bishonen | börk börk börk 09:25, 2 April 2006 (UTC).

Photosynthesis

Some time ago you helped improve the article Photosynthetic reaction centre to bring it to featured article standard. The article never became featured, probably because it's too obscure, so now I want to merge it with photosynthesis and then eventually rewrite that whole article. Few people have heard of reaction centres, but the majority of people have heard of photosynthesis, so this is probably a better candidate for a featured article. I just wondered if you would like to help merge the two articles appropriately. Thanks. --Miller 17:09, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Image:Signature george.PNG

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

Barnstar Brigade
The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Milwaukee crime section

Ryan, thanks for responding to my edit. I like to hear from people like this. My issue wasn't so much with the content of the paragraph, but with its location in the article. When a section on Race starts talking about crime, there is an implication that the two must be related. A crime section is something that's been thrown around a bit and has been the subject of debate on the Milwaukee discussion page. I am not opposed to a section that addresses crime, or a section that talks about racial tensions; however, the two probably should not be in the same section. Take care, -Nicktalk 07:41, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Climate pages

Let me first say that you're doing excellent work. I see that you are using exact conversion formulas for US to metric; I would recommend the use of significant figures to round the results off and obtain more natural-looking results.

As for the unit priority question, I may only be speaking for myself, but as an American working on an international project, I feel it is only appropriate to accept the primacy of the International System of Units. That being said, official guidelines state that source units should be written first; though it is unfortunate in my opinion that NOAA still uses Fahrenheit degrees and inches of precipitation as units of record. --AlexWCovington (talk) 08:47, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Heh heh, I'm obscurely flattered by this — smirk — though perhaps it isn't meant as a compliment at all! But I have to ask: what is a normal topic, in an encyclopedia of all human knowledge? Hmm... Pokemon? Bishonen | talk 03:48, 30 April 2006 (UTC).

NCAA FAC

Thanks for the tips and for the copyedit! I really don't know the FA scene, so I don't know how bloody it can be. I'm looking for ways to improve the article so that it can be an FA standard, something which peer review wasn't able to do. Again, thanks! Circa 1900 09:23, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

League of six towns of Upper Lusatia

Mit freundlichen Grüßen Knarf-bz 22:41, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
