This page is a forum for requesting co-examination of copyright and licensing of content with other Wikipedians before it is included in a Wikipedia article, or to request such co-examination of copyright and licensing of an image before the image is uploaded to Wikipedia.

1. Post a message defining the request on the talk page of the article where you propose to add content with unclear copyright.
2. Add {{copyrightexamination}} at the top of the request message on the talk page.
3. Add a link pointing at the talk page to top of the List of open requests found below on this page, including a short description of the problem.

[edit] Answering a request

• If you are confident that the content in question can freely be included in the article (considering the nature and location of the source, the extent of the use, and other Fair Use considerations), you are encouraged to add the content directly to the article. If you do so, post a short explanation on the talk page.
• If you believe that the content in question cannot legally be included, post a summary of your analysis to the article's talk page. Another editor may support your analysis, or come to a different conclusion.

In any event, copyright examinations performed by editors based on requests on this page are not final or definitive, and all material in articles is subject to further review, after it appears, through Wikipedia copyright problem procedures.

[edit] Rejecting a faulty request

Sometimes requests are mistakenly posted here for content already included in Wikipedia. In such cases it is important to inform the user who posted the request and keep request list clean. Rejection is done by

1. Moving the request to the List of rejected requests
2. Changing the {{copyrightexamination}} template to {{Copyrightexamination-rejected}} on the target article talk-page, possibly followed by a fuller explanation
3. Notifying the user who made the request on his/her talk page

[edit] Closing a valid request

When, following analysis/discussion here, the content in question has been included in the article, or there is a consensus that the content cannot be included, a request may be closed. Closing is done by

1. Changing the template on the article talk-page to either
   • {{copyrightexamination-included}}, if the content was included or
   • {{copyrightexamination-excluded}}, if the content could not be included.
2. Moving related discussion from this page to the article talk-page. (The discussion should always be on the article talk page, but this is sadly not always the case)
3. Removing the entry from List of open requests.

• Image talk:John316.jpg - A picture of a known copyrighted text, the New International Version of the Bible.

• Talk:Muay Thai - A picture or drawing(I'm not sure) that could fall under either Historical Photograph fair use or Author dead 100+ years fair use. I need help though to decide which license to use and if the photo/drawing might be used. Thanks! --NoNo 22:41, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

• Beautiful Ohio - could contain the lyrics to the song. Normally they would be copyrighted, but as it is the official state song of Ohio I thought it was the sort of thing that might be public domain.

• Talk:Catholicism and Freemasonry - Are convenience links acceptable to copies of an Encyclopedia article. --JASpencer 19:56, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

• Image:Armgenocide.jpg - not a photo, an English editorial cartoon that I doubt the uploader drew. might, however, be PD-Old. --M@rēino 14:47, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

• Talk:Amber Rose (porn star) - Can we get image(s) to the article from an old promotional gallery which is no longer online? --Easyas12c 16:01, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

• Talk:Dundee and Newtyle Railway - would it be possible to use this [1] photo in the article. I notice that it says copyright university of dundee archive services but the date on the photo states it was taken in 1833 Ydam 18:36, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

• Talk:Pashtun people - I was wondering, under what licence would this image have on the Commons? It says at the bottom of the page, Any use of this file must include "(C) Foley, Michael 2003/The Streets of Kabul", which gives me the idea that he gives people permission, so should I still contact him? —Khoikhoi 04:19, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

• Talk:Aria (Russian band) - I received permission to post a biography from a website, but I found out that their biography was just a translation of the band's official biography in Russian. Would it be ok to post the translation? ~MDD4696 (talk • contribs) 23:14, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

• Talk:Donald Knuth. It would be nice to provide an image of one of Donald Knuth's famous reward check, but I imagine that the bank who printed the checks may have copyright on it. Any idea ? Schutz 20:48, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

• Talk:Tule fog. I have a question about this image [2]]. The website ([3]) allows any educational use, but "not for any direct or indirect commercial purpose or advantage." To me this reads very similar to the policy at the Smithsonian Institute, and we allow use of their images. BlankVerse [[User talk:BlankVerse|∅] 10:21, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

• Talk:Zelenchukskaya Would it be fair use to post a frame grab from the Zelenchukskaya BTA-6 in-dome webcam? The site itself says nothing about copyright on the images. --BillC 11:10, 28 August 2005 (UTC)

• Template talk:Gamecover and Template talk:Game-screenshot. This is a followup to an earlier discussion. Please see that thread for the details. Please have a look at the templates as they are now and say whether including them will make sure we are not violating Wikipedia policy?
