101.7 signed on the air in 1988 as Regional Mexican outlet KZIA, but would go through a succession of formats (Oldies as KZKL (Kool 102, 1989-2000) and KQEO (2000-2002), AC as KOSZ ("Cozy" 05/02-11/02), Regional Mexican as "Viva" KVVF (2002-2004), and Smooth Jazz as "The Horizon" KAJZ) before flipping to its current one in October 2005.
The KQBT call letters originated on an Austin, Texas radio station now called KXBT, also nicknamed "The Beat."
