Images and media for deletion (IfD) is for listing images which are unneeded. Images that have been listed here for more than 5 days are eligible for deletion if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion have been raised.

Recovering deleted images: Image undeletion is now working. Currently undeletion requests should be brought to deletion review.

To force the server to update this page immediately, purge the cache.

I. For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use {{db|reason}}. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both images are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken images, non-existent images, non-commercial, and "by permission" images.

II. Images that have no source, or have an unknown copyright, or are unused fairuse, or are fairuse without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the image page:

{{subst:nsd}} if an image has no source indicated
{{subst:nld}} if an image has a source but no licensing information
{{subst:orfud}} if an image has a fair use tag but isn't used in any articles
{{subst:frn}} if an image has a fair use tag but no fair use rationale and was uploaded after May 4, 2006

III. Redundant or duplicate images do not have to be listed here. Please use

{{isd|Full name of image excluding the "Image:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other image is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
{{NowCommons|image name on Commons}} if the image now exists on Commons, or {{NCT}} for images with the same name on Commons

[edit] Listing images and media for deletion

To list an image:

Add {{ifd}} to the image page. (If the image is in use, also add {{ifdc|Image:Image_name.ext}} to the caption(s))
Follow [ this edit link] and list the image at the bottom of that page using {{subst:Ifd2|Image_name.ext|Uploader= |Reason= }} — ~~~~. If the image has been replaced by another image, also list that image in your reasons, in the format " Image1.jpg - obsoleted by Image2.jpg".
Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using {{subst:idw|Image:Image_name.ext}}

Remember to replace "Image_name.ext" with the name of the image or media

State the reasons why the image should be deleted. Some common reasons are:

Obsolete - The image has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new image name (often abbreviated OB)
Orphan - The image is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the image is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed images to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
Unencyclopedic - The image doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia. Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
Copyright violation - The image might be used in violation of copyright. (often abreviated CV)

These are not the only "valid" reasons to delete an image, any properly explained reason can be used, the above list are just the most common and uncontroversial ones.

Since abreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.

If you remove an image from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the image should be deleted. This is necessary because image pages do not remember the articles the images used to be used on (see talk page).

Keep The image is currently used in three articles. Two of these articles are about the huricane and the image is used as comentary in these articles about the role the media played in the aftermath, specifically Rivera's role. Strong keep - I am unclear as to the reasoning for this nomination. The image is being used to disuss the circumstance of his death, not as a means of identification; that is being done using the image at the top of the Nick Berg page. The first provision states, "No free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information" and given the events, no replacable image could be created. The image is not ~~"[a] photo from a press agency" (CE#5)~~ nor is it "[an] image of a living person that merely shows what they look like" (CE#8). This image is tagged as being under a free license. I doubt that this is the case. It was taken from an article, itself copylefted, on marxists.org. However, I doubt that they own the photo itself (Though hope to be proven wrong, of course). Images like this are wonderful to have, but it's probably not kosher. --Zantastik talk 22:09, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps the licensing is incorrect, it could be used under a {{fair use in}} template. It provides context for the article. Obviously a fair use rational would need to be created as well. Keep and Protect. This image is a smaller version of a microfilm digital scan provided by The Cleveland Public Library for the Sweetest Day article. The high resolution version of this image is too large for the article and the thumbnail is too small. This smaller version was made at Not a dog's request. Now he votes to delete it. How strange. It fits the article perfectly and is absolutely notable. The high resolution image is linked to this image for readers who may wish to copy it. This appears to be yet another attempt by Isotope and others to suppress and manage information in the Sweetest Day article. Miracleimpulse 17:25, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

The proper thing to do is to resize the image thumbnail within the article, as I did here [1]. If you thought the thumb was too small, all you have to do is increase the pixel size variable within the image syntax. I voted to delete this particular image file becuase Isotope is correct that the original file is of superior resolution. Not a dog 17:50, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Delete Since I didn't render an opinion in my nomination, I'm adding it here. Not a dog has it exactly right. You can see here that Not a dog resized the original image and the size could be adjusted (though personally I think the size of this image is much too big for the article). assuming the good faith you seem unwilling to extend to anyone else, you didn't know how to resize an image and just created this one, but it is redundant with the higher resolution image that can just be resized.--Isotope23 18:10, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

In the case of an image deletion warning, that tag isn't a warning in the same sense as {{test2}} or one of the other user warning templates. The warning is a notification of a discussion, rather than an indication that you have done something wrong. Images, except in cases of obvious problems, are not deleted when the uploader is not notified of the deletion discussion and so it is necessary for the closing admin to know that you have been informed of the discussion. Unless I'm missing something, all of these images look like copyright violations. Are you saying that you were the original photographer of each photo or the person who created the chart for the charts? I'm having trouble believing that you photographed the school's photos. Please note that merely making a modification to someone else's image doesn't give you rights to it.   - I don't dispute that no free equivalent could be created ... but the photo is of a news worthy event - the photo itself is not news. Honestly, if it were known to come from a law enforcement source, I wouldn't be as bothered by that, but news media photos absolutely have to be off limits (except for obviously iconic photos like Iowa Jima, Kent State shootings, etc) if Wikipedia is going to be a free-content encyclopedia. When a news photographer takes a photo and sells it to newspapers, the AP, whoever, that's their livelihood. We can't turn into an archive for CV news media photos. I looked at the other pictures on the sources on the description page and this one looks nothing like the law enforcement pictures (the ones from the local law enforcement look like they were shot with a $15 camera), so I'm guessing/assuming that it's a news media photo. - Yes, but sometimes there are images that we just plain can't use, even if they would be nice, helpful, pretty, or even "necessary". Far too often on Wikipedia, someone finds an image somewhere on the internet and says, "ooh, this would be a nice picture to use. It's copyrighted, therefore it must be fair use." Well, that's not what the fair use doctrine is. It's not a license to use an unlicensed picture.
