[edit] List of North American birds

Thanks for doing the promotion. I think we can be quietly pleased with progress to date. Filiocht | Blarneyman 15:01, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] sorry!

Sorry about that edit conflict; I saw your note on Filiochit's talk page that you weren't sure if you were going to be able to "save the popes" so I figured I'd take care of it. Hopefully it didn't cost you too much time. --Spangineer 18:10, Jun 1, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Sudoko

Let's put it this way: if you put one of those puzzles in front of me and I had to learn how to play it from our article, I would not be able to! It's a good article, very detailed and all, but as with some articles I've written (see for instance Architecture of Btrieve) an outsider would find it difficult to understand the mechanics of the game. - Ta bu shi da yu 23:31, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] re: Galena (mineral)??

What happened? Your last edit to Galena (mineral) summary says (Reverted edits by Vsmith to last version by Quuxplusone) and there was no edit reverted. Then when I looked at the history there was a redirect edit on Apr 22 that I did not make??? On Apr 22 I redirected the lead sulphide article to lead sulfide not the galena (mineral) article. Most confused. Vsmith 23:52, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks - kinda figured it was something like that - sounds like you had fun :-) with it. I may have done the cut & paste job last year when I was more a newbie than now, I'm learning. I have also requested a move from galena (mineral) to just plain galena which is now a redirect - in case you want to have some more fun. Thanks Vsmith 02:26, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Reqimage

I see that you coffee rolled the template, I originally couldn't get the image to align properly. Although I proposed adding the image to the coffe-rolled version, I also proposed the new version, and to move it off of the talk page. There was no opposition and some support for this. I intended for it to be a bit bolder and eye catching, however I did think its size could be downgraded. Photographs are requested a little more than standard pictures, however it would work for both. Here are my proposal pages 1, 2, 3. I also advertised it on Category:Articles needing images, until I placed it in use. Please let me know your thoughts on this, as it was not just a hasty design change, as I proposed the idea for more than 2 weeks. Thank you. <>Who?¿? 16:29, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Semispam

Hi, ALoan, this is not strictly speaking a spam message, it goes to you and Filiocht only. I put up a little straw poll about the new FARC rules at Wikipedia talk:Featured article removal candidates, perhaps you'd care to contribute? Normally I would just have been bold, but I have contributed so little to WP:FARC that I feel a delicacy about editing its instructions out of the blue. Bishonen | talk 20:40, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyrights

Hello ALoan! I've granted permission from UN Photo Department to use their photos here. With which image copyright tag should I tag these photos? I am not sure, cause of upcoming deleting campaign on "noncommercial" and "permission" photos. -- Darwinek 09:55, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikifun Round 9

Is now open to play. See WP:WF. -- AllyUnion (talk) 11:01, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks...

...for the kind words. I've continued lurking about, tweaking here and there, cooling off. If nothing else, the discussion of my post at the Village Pump seems to have brought some things to a head, gotten assorted feelings out in the open. Much better than simmering in silence. I've even learned how to change an article title. My mind is off magazines for the moment; presently, will be working on Film/Cinema, which seems to be in need of some major structuring. If I'd just remember to log in! I just did a 45-min "shell" of pre-Soviet Russian film history (as Film in Russia), which I think makes for a good jumping-off point, unlogged - I can't get no respect that way. [edit] Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Australian national cricket captains

Hi, You pointed out that the images in the above was not rendering correctly with the classic skin. That's fixed now. - Ian 07:44, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks, belatedly

Good to have people notice your edits and then leave nice notes for you. Tax law + astronomy + wiki seems like an interesting combination. Bambaiah 12:05, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] My list disaster

Thanks for fixing up my attempted promotion. It seems the database was locked while I was in full flow. Filiocht | Blarneyman 12:47, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Good fix

Thank you for your fix of the picture issue on List of current and former capital cities within U.S. states. I thought of several solutions, but none were as simple and elegant as yours. NoSeptember (talk) 14:31, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Timeline of discovery of Solar System planets and their natural satellites

I rolled back your change of planet ordering for the following reason: the "prehistorical" sequence of celestial bodies was, as stated in the text just above the table, « seven planets: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, which were all thought to orbit the Earth. ». The Sun position you edited is a modern viewpoint.

[edit] Blue Ant / Awesome

I don't know if it's just coincidence (wanted pages, etc.) or what, but it's retarded how little time transpired between me softlinking to Blue Ant at the reference desk and you creating the article. Kudos. ¦ Reisio 10:41, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Indeed. Further evidence that Wikipedians rock. Kudos --Tagishsimon (talk)

Well thanks to all you guys for making the page on my photo. --Fir0002 10:14, Jun 19, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Taxoboxes

Taxoboxes are documented in some detail at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life/taxobox usage. The general rule is to give the seven major ranks plus just enough of the minor ranks to give context to the taxon being described in the article. (Thus superfamily can be specified if the article is about a family, tribe if the article is about a genus, etc.) Gdr 11:14, 2005 Jun 16 (UTC)

[edit] FARC proposal

Nichalp has expressed his approval of a compromise solution that I proposed that is similar to a suggestion made by Piotrus. Please comment if you have the chance. Thanks. --Spangineer (háblame) 18:26, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Did you know?

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Blue Ant, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

[edit] Theo RFA

I'd very much like you to look at this and tell me to shut up if I'm being just plain stupid. Filiocht | Blarneyman 15:05, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)
I suppose you're right, but going here and getting into a narrow circle of clicks when I try to find out about whose sock this user is strikes me as just plain silly. Yes, you're right. The value of FLC is to let this good content shine and to set a benchmark for other lists. I can live with the cricket theme, if we can't have more poetry. Filiocht | Blarneyman 13:02, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Buckingham Palace

It's very flattering that you have, yet again, nominated Buckingham Palace, bit I fear you are flogging a dead (albeit thoroughbred) horse. Blenheim Palace is much better and that too failed, I fear some people just don't like palaces, I seem to have more luck these days with New Zealand's architecture, it appeals to a more egalitarian readership I suppose.Giano | talk 12:38, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Stadium stubs

I have just noticed the stubs you have created to make the red links go away in List of Test cricket grounds. You are a star! -- ALoan (Talk) 19:20, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, but I've only done the India ones. :) =Nichalp «Talk»= 19:22, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
I know, but even so, well done! You might have noticed that I moved the Bombay Gymkhana, btw. If you want to expand the stubs, Cricinfo has profile pages for all Test grounds - I added one to the gymkhana. -- ALoan (Talk) 19:46, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I don't think I'll be expanding the stadiums so soon. Got lots of other things to do, and I don't particularly like repetitive tasks. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:28, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Waterloo Vase

I guess you submitted this one to DYK. At the moment it's rather stubbish. Could you get it over the 1000 bytes mark, so I can have it featured (see rules on WP:DYK)? I'm kinda hoping for more non-US items. - Mgm|(talk) 10:45, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

  • I believe it was short about 200 characters. But you'd have to check to be sure. - Mgm|(talk) 12:09, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
  • Maybe it's my screen, but regardless of its actual size, this article appears to be tiny. Could you add a source? Maybe someone can find more info to expand it. - Mgm|(talk) 12:17, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
  • Yep, nicely expanded. Thanks for notifying me. - Mgm|(talk) 15:45, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

I see you've put a FormerFA template on this articles' talk page today. I would like to know why, as I can find no record of this article ever being nominated to have FA status removed, nor any discussion of any nomination. -- Arwel 15:17, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've modified one of the tables so that it looks neat. See if it ok and then you do the same for the other tables. 2) There are some free images on some cricket stadiums in commons. See commons:cricket. =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:53, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for the welcome. While I'm at least somewhat familiar with Wikis, I'm a bit new at Wikipedia - so forgive me if I'm kinda newbish. Also, I don't believe I'm also that user you mentioned on my talk page.

The reason I moved the UK flag down a bit on the Template:Wikiportal:United Kingdom/Header page is because (in Firefox at least) some of the text next to it was obscured by the flag image floating on top of it. Even though I also think the flag looks better nearer the top, the text is no longer obscured.

Thanks again for the welcome! Pieterkonink June 30, 2005 02:04 (UTC)

[edit] CK Nayudu

ALoan, thanks for the copyedit but you need not take the trouble. There is a lot more stuff to go in between the section about the 1932 tour and the passage about his courage. Once that is through, I'll do the wikifications myself and put it up under the 'new articles' section in Ckt project.

Thanks, Tintin 30 June 2005 13:02 (UTC)

On second thoughts, thanks for adding the categories etc. I was talking about the wikification of the main text alone Tintin 30 June 2005 16:37 (UTC)

[edit] Periodic table (huge)

No problem, sorry to mess you up. The bracket thing is still necessary—for those elements, there is no "stable" isotope composition, so the only thing to go on is the isotope with the longest life. The IUPAC source doesn't provide atomic weights for those elements; it just gives weights for each individual isotope. I added a short sentence to the note about all that. I'm not sure what to do about the lead; it seems to me like there should be a definition of what the table includes, since wikipedia has 3 or 4 periodic tables with differing amounts of info on them. --Spangineer (háblame) June 30, 2005 18:24 (UTC)

Yeah, assuming that the key stays above the table itself, you're probably right. I'm still a bit concerned about defining the scope of the various periodic tables of wikipedia, but perhaps the others should be renamed with more descriptive adjectives. I'm pretty pleased with how it looks right now; we'll see if OpenToppedBus's concerns were addressed. --Spangineer (háblame) July 1, 2005 01:16 (UTC)

[edit] Aloan PLEASE RESTORE THE ARTICLE EDIP YUKSEL

Khizar- I believe everything possible has been done to make the article short, accurate n neutral. Why do you keep deleting/removing it, i really dont understand.

As far as I can see, Edip Yuksel was properly deleted and improperly recreated more than once. Several other admins deleted it before me. I deleted it once, and added the {{deletedpage}} template to stop the recreations while the debate goes on on WP:VFU. It looks like it will go back to WP:VfD shortly - if you can show me an WP:NPOV version of the article, I will replace the template with it: otherwise I am going to leave the template there. -- ALoan (Talk) 1 July 2005 11:22 (UTC)

QA- The votes for undeletion by far excede those of "keep deleted". Therefore my request is to restore Edip Yuksel's article now.

[edit] List of countries where UN peacekeepers were deployed

Hey there. So I liked your idea, and went ahead and created it and have been working on it for a while now. Only I just noticed that you did, too. You see, I used the name List of UN peacekeeping missions (as in, somewhee for all of them). Then I saw that you already created this article a day before me, and I feel kinda silly. But I do like my title better, so, um, would you mind much if we made your article into a redirect to mine? At least you hadn't gotten far, or we would have repeated lots of work. --Dmcdevit 3 July 2005 07:55 (UTC)

Have done so for now. Of course it's perfectly revertible if you object. --Dmcdevit 4 July 2005 05:18 (UTC)

[edit] "Merge" template voting

I've set up two separate votes on the "merge" templates' discussion page. One pertains to the templates' wording, and the other pertains to the templates' visual design. Users may vote on neither, either or both of these issues.

Please note that I've posted this invitation on the talk pages of everyone who has expressed a preference for either wording and/or visual design. —Lifeisunfair 3 July 2005 19:48 (UTC)

[edit] Help - TOC template is causing problems!

We seem to have a new template that is really screwing with the sites formatting. See Template:TOCright. I have listed it on WP:TFD. To see how it is causing problems, see Daniel Pipes and Intelligent Design. It's been applied to a huge number of pages... the latest was W. Mark Felt. Anything that effects major elements like the TOC, IMO, should be dealt with in CSS. - Ta bu shi da yu 4 July 2005 08:08 (UTC)

[edit] Need legal help

Hi! Since you are familiar with legal text etc. I need some help here with would potentially have a huge impact in wikipedia. India has passed the Right to Information Act which allows " means right of access to information from any public authority" "by obtaining diskettes, floppies or any other electronic mode or through print-outs where such information is stored in a computer or in any other device;" and "any reproduction of image or images embodied in such microfile (whether enlarged or not)". This is for the state of Karnataka. I've used this search string: [1] and I've got an interesting result. Some more information. This article says its passed by the Indian government.

In short, what I want to know is: are images for .gov.in, .ac.in and nic.in (all GoI sites) in Public domain? Thanks. User:Nichalp/sg July 4, 2005 09:56 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the info. User:Nichalp/sg July 4, 2005 15:28 (UTC)

[edit] VAT's up?

I didn't know you were the Featured List Director! congrats!. Need some info abt VAT in the UK. Say if you (an end user) were to buy a product (lets say a digital camera) whose listed price is 5 pounds. Is this the total amt you have to pay, or would you have 5 pounds + %vat. User:Nichalp/sg July 5, 2005 15:09 (UTC)

Thanks for the info but... I didn't know you off for a holiday. Are you still online? User:Nichalp/sg July 5, 2005 16:37 (UTC)
OK. I don't know if you know, but most states in India switched to VAt on 1 April. I went to buy a product and they told me the listed price. At billing time, it was +4% VAT extra. I wasn't amused. Q: why should the end users pay for VAT. Shouldn't it be the middlemen who make / buy products? User:Nichalp/sg July 5, 2005 16:48 (UTC)
Thanks for the info on VAT. Cleared some of my doubts now. User:Nichalp/sg July 6, 2005 06:42 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you from Fonzie Fan

[edit] Did you know?

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Waterloo Vase, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

[edit] Canadian Heraldic Authority

Please see talk page, for a response to your concerns regarding the article being given Featured Article status. Thank you. --Mb1000 21:04, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

I also have the answers to some of your questions. However, I do not know what famous people received arms or anyone questionable who received arms. I do have some offline resources, but they are in a box right now. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 02:04, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Classic stylesheet fix

Before I change something that could annoy lots of people (if I'm wrong and there are drawbacks), I'd feel comfortable if someone else (who routinely looks at a different set of articles than I do) ran the fix for a couple of days. So, could you copy

div.tright {
  clear: right;
}

into User:ALoan/standard.css and see how it works for you?

Alternatively, if you're getting tired of classic's antiquey look you can try my experimental "Monoclassic" skin, which fixes this problem and gives classic a slightly more modern look. To install it, copy all of User:Finlay McWalter/standard.css to User:ALoan/standard.css.

Either way, tell me how you get on. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 11:50, July 31, 2005 (UTC)
