Northern Ireland Law Commission

The Northern Ireland Law Commission is a Law Commission in Northern Ireland that will be created under section 50 of the Justice (Northern Ireland) Act 2002, implementing recommendations following the Good Friday Agreement. The Act has not yet been brought into force, but it is expected that the Northern Ireland Law Commission will be created in 2007. It will replace the exising non-statutory Law Reform Advisory Committee.
The Northern Ireland Law Commission will keep the law of Northern Ireland under review, with a view to law reform. It will have five members, a part-time chairman and four full-time commissioners, appointed by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. The chairman will be a judge of the High Court of Northern Ireland, who will retain judicial office while acting as chairman. The other commissioners will include a barrister, a solicitor, a legal academic, and a layperson.
