The guitar is a type of musical instrument. It is a string instrument played with the fingers, or a plectrum.
Guitars have a body, a neck and a head. Guitars may be acoustic, electric or both. Guitars are used in a lot of musical styles. They are made and repaired by people called luthiers. Guitars have 6, 7 or 12 (every string twice which makes it sound better) strings, and one or two pickups that pickup the sound. Most people think that there is no difference between playing an acoustic and electric guitar, but they are very different instruments: Electric Guitars have longer and smaller necks and the space between the strings and the neck is smaller which makes it easier to play. But because every tone is amplified so much, you have to mute (stop the string swinging) a lot. Acoustic guitars don't weigh so much but have less marks on the neck. Guitars are used in many different genres of music such as traditional regional Folk to modern Punk, Rock, Metal or Pop. It can be used as a rhythm or the leading melodic instrument.
