Engineering is using science to do things or to make things. People who do engineering are called engineers. Engineers usually design or build things that are sold or given to people.

Engineering is a big discipline, and it has many sub-disciplines. Following are a few of the many types of engineers:
- Civil engineers build bridges or design road systems.
- Chemical engineers make chemicals, eg. drugs and medicines or fertilisers for crops.
- Electrical engineers design or build electrical devices like motors and generators. They also design the electrical transmission lines. Another area they deal with is electronics, when electronic devices like televisions and radios are designed and built.
- Mechanical engineers design machines or things that move, like sportscars. Mechanical engineers help design electricity generating stations, oil refineries, and factories using mechanical components like boilers, turbines, pumps, fans, pipes, screw , bolts , nuts and valves.
- Software engineers design and write programs for computers, like Linux, Unix and Microsoft Windows.
- Aerospace engineers design space vehicles or airplanes. Many non-engineers think rocket science is something difficult. However, it is not more difficult than any other engineering.
- Manufacturing engineers design and improve the machines and assembly lines that make things. They work with robots, hydraulics and air-operated devices to help companies work faster and better with fewer mistakes.

The better way to be an engineer in France is the CPGE (Classe Preparatoire pour les Grandes Ecoles = preparation for engineer's school) in two years followed by three years in an "Ecole d'Ingénieur" (Engineer's school). You can also study in an IUT (Institut universitaire technologique) during 3 years followed by 3 years in an "Ecole d'Ingénieur"
