Tijs Verwest'in Tüm Aliasları

Alias: A3

Members: Tijs Verwest & Ahmet Buyukkafali

Timeline: 1998

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: One-time collaboration between Tiesto & DJ Montana for a record appearing on the Space Age 2.0 mix CD compilation.

Key Records: Imperial Forces

Alias: Alibi

Members: Tijs Verwest & Armin van Buuren

Timeline: 2000/1

Associated Label: Armind/Reef/Vandit

Story: Really? Can you honestly see it? Back in the day Armin was taken under Tijs' wing at Black Hole recordings, commissioned to make a Mix CD for upcoming Artists, and collaborated under the Alibi & Major League aliases. This co-operation resulted in the launch release of the Armind label, and confirmed Armin's arrival in the scene following his earlier releases (Blue Fear, 1997 & Communication, 1999).

Key Records: Alibi - Eternity (Original Innercity Mix)

Alias: Allure

Members: Tijs Verwest & Cor Fijneman

Timeline: 1998 - 2001 (2nd run: 2004 - present)

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: Originally a collaboration alias between good friends Tijs Verwest & Cor Fijneman the alias has recently been given a re-awakening by Tiesto on his own. During the collaborative years, Allure stood for a highly melodic sound - similar in style to Hammock Brothers productions before them. A new release was created per Magik CD series release it seems. Roughly one release per year during the most popular uplifting trance years 1997-2001. In 2004 writing tunes for the second Tiesto In Concert, Tijs Verwest updated the alias, with a new tech-edged sound, with the still unreleased tracks "Spastik" and "Eastern Magik". Following the success of the concert, and the high demand - Tiesto released The Loves We Lost under the Allure alias in early 2006, nearly 2 years after it was completed. The reason behind this resurrection was the unbelievable popularity of the Tiesto franchise at the time. In 2004 Tiesto had already released the successful Just Be and Parade Of Athletes Artist Albums and felt that the tracks made for the second Tiesto In Concert were in a different style to the singles made for those albums. The more clubby-vibe therefore is represented by the second-incarnation of the Allure alias.

Key Records: No More Tears; Loves We Lost

Alias: Andante

Members: Tijs Verwest & Arny Bink

Timeline: 1998

Associated Label: What's Cookin' (NL), Songbird

Story: Andante is pretty unknown alias from Tijs and label manager Arny Bink. The only release from this alias is the original mix of Above The Clouds which fittingly backed a cdr release of Piet Bervoets & Benno de Goeij's (Rank 1) update to Bronski Beat - Small Town Boy.

Key Records: Above The Clouds

Alias: Carlos

Members: Carlo Resoort & Piet Bervoets

Timeline: 1997/8

Associated Label: Karma (NL).

Story: This is early-alias from Carlo Resoort, who was at the time receiving producing aid from Piet Bervoets. Basic Beat Records in Rotterdam had a lot to answer for. Karma is one of their sub-labels, and the 'community spirit' at the label is in evidence here, Tijs coming in to co-produce the track La Silmarillia. Although most of the Basic Beat Crew from the mid-nineties are now following their own paths, its very interesting to see just how close all these producers were 10-12 years ago. Carlo Resoort dropped the Carlos alias in the new millenium and now produces under his own name. New mixes of La Silmarillia are scheduled to be released in 2006.

Key Records: La Silmarillia

Alias: Clear View

Members: Tijs Verwest & Greg van 's Gravesande

Timeline: 1996 - 1997

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: Having collaborated previously on Bonzai Jumps & Guardian Angel, it was only natural that Greg van 's Gravesande followed Tijs to his new label in 1996. Needing a different alias 'Clear View' was created (previously West & Storm). Following the collaborations between Tijs & Cor as Allure, he also made a track-per-year with Greg under the Clear View alias. This was perhaps only to create 'filler' for the Magik Series - no Clear View singles were actually pressed on Black Hole Recordings label! The two releases only featured as part of the Magik Album Samplers respectively. Although they would later be released separately by German partner label, Planetary Consciousness in 1998.

Key Records: Never Enough & Cry For Love

Alias: Control Freaks

Members: Tijs Verwest, Benno de Goeij & Piet Bervoets

Timeline: 1997

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: Back in the Basic Beat Recordshop days the Rank 1 boys were releasing under 5-6 different aliases, its no wonder that when Tijs started his own label, they also made a track with him. Subspace Interference was featured on Magik Series, and although there were no other releases credited to this alias, its perhaps worth noting that soon afterwards the Rank 1 project of Piet & Benno took them to a new level of status, leaving this project well alone in the years that followed.

Key Records: Subspace Interference

Alias: Da Joker

Member: Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1994

Associated Label: Trashcan Records (NL)

Story: Hardcore/Gabber sub-label offshoot from Basic Beat Records, Rotterdam. This was Tijs' first 'known' productions in a style we wouldn't expect to hear from him today. Really hard-ass gabber style! The scene in Rotterdam at the time was completely set up for this kind of rave music, and along with Arny Bink, the Rank 1 guys, Carlo Resoort, Tijs was at the forefront of the production of Basic Beat's releases. Not much can be said of these releases, the two LP's title tracks (see below) featured on a number of mix compilations in '94 and '95.

Key Records: In The Ghetto, Spiritual Wipe Out.

Alias: DJ Limited

Members: Tijs Verwest & Rob Verhoeven

Timeline: 1994

Associated Label: Coolman Records

Story: Tijs' connections in the Rotterdam hardcore scene was not just limited to the Basic Beat staff-roster, at the time a famous night club (synonymous with the birth of the Dutch house-scene) called Parkzicht was just gaining popularity. While the club no longer holds regular parties, the label offshoot Coolman Records is still going strong to this day. Tiesto here teamed up with Rob Verhoeven, one of the leading lights of the Parkzicht DJ scene. Amazingly, Parkzicht clubbers are still going at it well into their mid-thirties (I've happened to meet a few!) and they still share the same love & drive for good solid house music. Not one of Tijs' better known hardcore aliases but one with perhaps the most connections to the Dutch hardcore scene back in 1994.

Key Records: Arabsession E.P.

Alias: DJ Maikel / DJ Yves / DJ Yves & DJ Maikel / DJ Yves & Two Deejays / Glycerine

Members: Maikel van 't Hof, Yves Vandichel & Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1994 - 1996

Associated Label: Bonzai Jumps / Trashcan Records

Story: These 3 guys seem like studio partners from the Hardcore period of Tijs' career 1994-96. Very little information can be found about DJ Maikel. Seems like that guy didn't do much after the Hardcore period, DJ Yves on the other hand was a successful resident of Club-X and a component of the Cherry Moon scene (some party nights and associated scene in Belgium (i think)) similar to the Boccaccio. In what must have been some kind of foreign exchange program, Maikel & Tijs made some tunes with Yves on Bonzai hardcore label Bonzai Jumps, while they also released tracks under Glycerine and a few other pseudonyms on Trashcan Records. Incidentally, Trashcan (offshoot of Basic Beat) initiates the origins of Forbidden Paradise Mix CD series, the first two of which mixed by Tijs' manager and long-time friend Arny Bink. Not much is known about this period of Tijs' career, quite simply because he was not that big outside of the Rotterdam hardcore scene, but its clear out of that scene, he's the one who has gone the most places. I wonder what these early-nineties friends think now about they guy who they used to work with so closely?

Key Records: Hold On, 666, Combat E.P.

Alias: DJ Misja

Members: Misja Helsloot & Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1998

Associated Label: In Trance We Trust

Story: The birth of a new sub-label to promote trancier style, saw Tijs welcome Misja Helsloot aboard In Trance We Trust. This was launch pad to Misja's career. A domestically successful trance DJ from Den Haag. He mixed the first In Trance We Trust compilation, which featured this tune among others from the Black Hole label at the time. It appears Tiesto was instrumental in the co-production here.

Key Records: E-Mocean

Alias: DJ Tiesto

Members: 1996 - 2003

Timeline: Tijs Verwest (with Denis Waakop-Reijers & Hans-Willem Mallon)

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings / Magik Muzik

Story: The birth of a legend! Tijs' first release under his DJ alias was waaaay back in 1996 when XTC pressed The Tube E.P. It wasn't actually until 1999 when the decision was made to use the alias for good. Probably due to the increasing popularity of the DJ alias, the first release to gain worldwide admiration and respect for Tijs was 'Sparkles'. 'Theme From Norefjell' quickly followed, at a time in Tiesto's career when Norway was one of a handful of countries dominating his booking schedule.

Then there was a gap. Tijs was commissioned for various remix work at this point, which eventually would go on to define the sound of this alias and cement Tiesto as the pioneer trance producer we know him to be today.

During the trance-boom 98-99 Tiesto remixed tracks for a number of UK labels, including the seminal trance classic Balearic Bill - Destination Sunshine. It's recently been made public that there was involvement of sound engineers to polish, and physically create Tijs' ideas at the mixing desk. The co-operation began, between Denis Waakop Reijers, Hans-Willem Mallon and Tijs in this period.

In 2001 the first artist album was well received worldwide, In My Memory featured Tijs working with a number of vocalists, most notably Kirsty Hawkshaw to good effect. The highlights of this album (for the dancefloor) Lethal Industry, Flight 643 and Suburban Train, went on to make Tiesto famous globally. All 3 received the video treatment, and since 2001 have been a mainstay on any latenight music channel selector - not just in Holland! It was a major achievement, as a year previously Paul Oakenfold had also tried to market a 'trance artist album' without much success. This was perhaps the groundbreaker that Tijs needed to begin the rapid rise to fame. His career certainly took off from 2001 onwards. Also in this time, the birth of the Magik Muzik label was created. While Tijs would finish with the series in 2001, the label was designed to be a medium for Tiesto tracks to be released and is now the label has become more than just a title but a brandname.

The DJ Tiesto alias was used up to the period when Tijs became the World's Number 1 DJ in November 2002. During this period it was very fashionable to remove the "DJ" alias from artist names, and this is exactly what resulted in with DJ Tiesto becoming simply Tiesto. It marked a complete shift in the scene too, where DJs' were no longer JUST DJ's, but producers, showmen and superstars as well as guys who could mix records.

The franchise was to continue to grow. And even though In My Memory was the last artist material released under the DJ Tiesto alias, Tijs continued to make many remixes 2000 - 2003 probably due to the success and demand for his "sound" made deservedly popular from such classics as Delerium - Silence.

Not content with his own records, Tijs also created the Magikal Remake under the DJ Tiesto alias. This updated his own productions and favourite songs with the new "sound" found by Tijs, Denis & Hans in the studio.

Key Records: Sparkles, Theme From Norefjell, Lethal Industry, Flight 643, Suburban Train

Alias: Drumfire

Members: Tijs Verwest (and i suspect Ahmet Buyukkafali)

Timeline: 1998

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: One-time Tiesto alias - as featured on Space Age 1.0 mix CD compilation. What more can i say? Other than completely random! Flying Squirrels is now being used by TL Crew to describe random fake sets of Tiesto (i really hope this catches on and gets used all over the internet!)

Key Records: Flying Squirrel Problem

Alias: Gouryella

Members: Tijs Verwest & Ferry Corsten

Timeline: 1998 - 2000 (Ferry Corsten continued the project to 2002)

Associated Label: Tsunami

Story: One of the most popular aliases Tijs was involved in. Gouryella was the uplifting, heavy bassline alias from the two most successful Dutch-Trance producers at the time Ferry Corsten & Tiesto. While they also worked together as Vimana, for Tijs' label, this alias for Ferry's own Tsunami label was the one that got the recognition. Gouryella's self-titled hit was followed up yearly by "Walhalla", "Tenshi" & a number of high-profile remixes, most notably Binary Finary's "1999". Unfortunately for this collaboration the decision by Tijs to leave the project in 2001 (to follow his own career) has since cast a shadow over the series. Rumours abounded that the 'sound' of even the first 3 releases were mostly Ferry Corsten's work with little Tiesto involvement. The following release (as Ferry continued the series) "Ligaya" was equally successful, but the feeling had been lost and the alias was abandoned.

Key Records: Gouryella, Walhalla & Tenshi.

Alias: Hammock Brothers

Members: Tijs Verwest & Roland Kramer

Timeline: 1996 - 1999

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: Roland Kramer was another of these Basic Beat staff figures that worked with Tijs in the late-nineties. The first example of their work together was the track "Meladonic" which featured on Tijs' last Forbidden Paradise mix CD compilation in 1996. While this track did not get a full release on that label, its likely to have been because Tijs and his friends decided to leave the Guardian Angel project behind and move on to form Black Hole Recordings. Here Tijs collaborated with Roland Kramer in a similar vein to Cor Fijneman (Allure) and Greg van 's Gravesande (Clear View), including a Hammock brothers track on each of the first 3 Magik Mix CD Compilations.

Key Records: Sea, Earth, Blaze Of Night

Alias: Hard Target

Members: Tijs Verwest & Greg van 's Gravesande

Timeline: 1995

Associated Label: Trashcan Records

Story: Another alias between Tijs & Greg. This one was featured on the Trashcan Records offshoot run by Arny Bink. The duo would continue to make records under many aliases on Guardian Angel (West & Storm) and Black Hole Recordings (Clear View). Clearly the start of something productive

Key Records: Knights Of Hardcore

Alias: Kamaya Painters

Members: Tijs Verwest & Benno de Goeij

Timeline: 1998 - 2001

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: The relations between Rank 1 and Tijs continue. Benno de Goeij continued to produce with Tijs until 2001 when he abandoned all known aliases in favour of using ONLY the DJ Tiesto alias to promote his DJ name. I'm a bit biased here - because Kamaya Painters is my favourite collaboration Tijs made. Endless Wave is truly classic, Far From Over & Cryptomnesia just amazing. Wasteland - perhaps not rated as highly, but for me, a superb track. This collaboration was not restricted to a single sound, starting out as an uplifting alternative to Control Freaks, however by the final release of Wasteland, the sound of this alias had moved onto something resembling progressive trance of the finest calibre! This is exemplified by the b-side Summerbreeze which featured on ISOS 2.

Key Records: Endless Wave, Cryptomnsia, Northern Spirit, Soft Light, Far From Over, Wasteland, Summerbreeze

Alias: Main Men

Members: Benno de Goeij & Piet Bervoets

Timeline: 1997

Associated Label: Dance Energy

Story: I told you those Rank 1 guys get everywhere! Before they were known as Rank 1, they formed the alias Main Men for the Dance Energy offshoot of Basic Beat Records. Tijs' involvement here is primarily on the b-side "Proceed" which he co-produced. It is perhaps a surprise to some people that Tijs and Rank 1 had such a quality studio relationship "back in the day" but thats part of the point of writing these blogs... so you get to find out!

Key Records: Proceeed

Alias: Major League

Members: Tijs Verwest & Armin van Buuren

Timeline: 2000/1

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings / Captivating Sounds

Story: Alibi - Eternity went to Armin's Armind label, while Major League - Wonder was the collaborations Black Hole Recordings contribution. Talk about short end of the stick... the instrumental just about works, but my god - what is that vocal version???

Key Records: Wonder (Where You Are!)

Alias: Paradise In Dubs

Members: Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1996

Associated Label: Guardian Angel

Story: Tijs' alias for the offshoot from Basic Beat Records set up by him and Arny Bink.

Key Records: In My Heart

Alias: Passenger

Members: Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1996

Associated Label: Momentum Recordings

Story: new label? new Alias? Tijs kicked off the Momentum Recordings label under this alias with release "Blackspin". It was the only one under this name, so obviously made a big impression! The coding from the label's parent - Essential Dance Music B.V. is remarkably similar to that of ID&T the megaconglomerate of Dutch EDM. Could be the first signs of a partnership between Tijs and the guys behind TIC 1? Maybe! Continuing a theme - the remix duties went to Rank 1 under their Southsquare alias.

Key Records: Blackspin

Alias: Roze

Members: Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1998

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: One-time artist alias from Tiesto. "Our Love" features on two of his compilations, Global Clubbing Netherlands and Magik Far From Earth. While it was an alias that wasn't used again, I'd think its safe to say the name & release title had something to do with Tijs' personal life in '98

Key Records: Our Love

Alias: Stray Dog

Members: Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1996 - 1999

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: Another one of these Magik Series aliases. Only "Mirror" received a proper full release. While a number of other tracks came on album samplers and CD compilations. The "sound" of Stray Dog was typically uplifting trance. Which is probably why the Dog is no longer at the races in the new century.

Key Records: Mirror, The Next Chapter, Chapter Two

Alias: T-Scanner

Members: Tijs Verwest & Greg van 's Gravesande

Timeline: 1994

Associated Label: Chemo Records

Story: Tijs & Greg combine again, but this time as T-Scanner on another independent label from Rotterdam. This release is interestingly a mixture between some kind of hardcore bass, and some rather untypically melodic synth line. A turning of the corner? This release was featured on Tiesto's first publically released Mix CD compilation: Forbidden Paradise 3.

Key Records: Trip To Heaven

Alias: TB X-Press

Members: Tijs Verwest & Bjorn Wendelen

Timeline: 1996

Associated Label: Bonzai Jumps

Story: Here is an interesting one. I haven't seen Bjorn's name elsewhere on Tijs' CV but here they cross paths on a relatively unknown release. Bjorn Wendelen like DJ Yves was a key figure in the Cherry Moon club in Lokeren, Belgium. He formed Byte Progressive a successful trance label during the 90's and has since formed his own label Ghoststyle (after his DJ alias, DJ Ghost). This label released Dark Alliance in 2004... its a small world. However, this collaboration on Bonzai Jumps isn't exactly very memorable. Its hardcore - right down to the stupid title.

Key Records: If I Was A Sperm E.P.

Alias: Tiesto

Member: Tijs Verwest (with Denis Waakop-Reijers)

Timeline: 2003 - present

Associated Label: Magik Muzik

Story: With the abandonment of the DJ prefix, Tijs has continued to release under his "brandname" Tiesto. In 2004 this included TWO separate artist albums.

The change to Tiesto alias happened quite quickly, the first time it was noticeable was on a set of remixes from late 2002. Tijs had recently become the World's Number 1 DJ and for the next 3 years he would wear that crown, fittingly the DJ was dropped to establish the "Tiesto" franchise. The name became more than just a DJ or Producer but almost akin to a lifestyle.

There was a slight alteration in 'sound' too. With the addition of more and more plug-ins and the Virus software used to full effect on tracks like Nyana, Tijs' sound became more accessible than ever.

Just Be - Tiesto's second artist album - was unbelievably received worldwide. These are the tunes the breezahs want. They are heard on the radio every day, they're on music channels, and they're STILL in Tijs' playlist. Talk about successful.

The second release was Parade Of The Atheletes. Tijs performed live at the Olympics Opening Ceremony to a TV audience of Billions (although how many actually could identify or appreciate this feat is another thing).

Perhaps more importantly was the drama behind the scenes. The production team behind the Tiesto alias was split, and after much legal wrangling Hans-Willem Malon left the team. One of Tijs' best friends, Denis Waakop-Reijers continues to aid him in the studio, and will be one of the key engineers on the upcoming fourth artist album in 2007.

The immense popularity of Tiesto as an artist these days, makes these kind of revelations quite scandalous, to think that he didn't singlehandedly write every note of every track? Common sense should prevail, that Tijs and Denis team up and produce some of the best pieces of modern dance music.

The results of their recent studio time have been heard now in the He's A Pirate remix and Dance4Life tune... who knows how this will be reflected on the new artist album!

Key Records: Traffic, Nyana, Love Comes Again, Adagio For Strings, Magikal Circus, Just Be.

Alias: Tijs, Storm & Montana

Members: Tijs Verwest, Greg van 's Gravesande & Ahmet Buyukkafani

Timeline: 1998

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: While DJ Montana doesn't feature in this guide too much, its worth noting that he has been very instrumental in Tijs' development over the years. His hard-ass prog-techno sound has rubbed off a bit on Tijs... and these early collaborations established a friendship that stretched Tiesto's whole career. Recently Montana has been involved making edits, remixes and updates of Tiesto's back catalog. Not only for the Tiesto In Concert event in 2004... but also a series of edits including Lethal Industry in 2005/6.

Back to 1998... and this release was featured on the Space Age Mix CD series and has a techier harder edge to it than other Tijs & Greg aliases.

Key Records: Bleckentrommel, Gimme Some Sugar

Alias: Tom Ace

Members: Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1996

Associated Label: Bonzai Jumps

Story: This alias was Tijs' artist alias from the Bonzai hardcore label Bonzai Jumps. Incredibly one of the b-sides to this release features the vocals from the Fugees - Ready Or Not, and people complain of Tijs' commerciality these days!!!

Key Records: I Wanna Get High, Second Game

Alias: Vimana

Members: Tijs Verwest & Ferry Corsten

Timeline: 1999

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: Similar to the Armin/Major League/Alibi collaboration, the Ferry/Gouryella collabs for Tsunami also meant that Ferry returned the favour for Tijs' Blackhole label with the Vimana alias. While this alias is probably considered the lesser brother of Gouryella, it still carries some weight. We Came/Dreamtime is just one of those stand-out releases from the Black Hole Back Catalogue that should be in every Tiestofans collection.

Key Records: We Came, Dreamtime

Alias: West & Storm

Members: Tijs Verwest & Greg van 's Gravesande

Timeline: 1995 - 1996

Associated Label: Guardian Angel

Story: The pre-cursor to the Clear View alias, this was the mainstay of the Guardian Angel lablel. Releasing 3 different E.P.'s in under a year it was Tijs & Greg's most productive years together. The transition from hardcore/gabber to more trancey territory is evident in this alias, as with the move from T-Scanner & Hard Target aliases, West & Storm was first alias we can safely say Tijs was making TRANCE MUSIC. Interestingly, "Moose" the last collaboration between Tijs & Greg as West & Storm was released on the Magik 2 Album Sampler, despite not actually appearing on the Mix CD.

Key Records: We'll Meet Again, Dans La Boite, Porpoise

Alias: Wild Bunch

Members: Tijs Verwest

Timeline: 1997 - 1999

Associated Label: Black Hole Recordings

Story: Tijs didn't need Montana to make techno releases. As well as Drumfire, he also worked alone on the Wild Bunch alias. This alias was centred around the Groove Lounge - but also had a unreleased track ("Jonka") on the Forbidden Paradise Mix CD Series. So this was actually an alias from back in the Guardian Angel days. Fortunately Tijs could still use it to release techno records in 97-99 thanks to Jonka not being released. Both Groove Lounge related tracks made appearances on the Space Age Mix CD Compilation Series.

Key Records: Groove Lounge, Return Of The Groove Lounge
