Shippagan, New Brunswick
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shippagan is a town in northeastern New Brunswick, Canada, at the tip of the Acadian Peninsula. As of 2001 the town had a population of 2,872, of which 99% speak French.
The town was founded by the Duguay family, from Paspebiac, Quebec, in 1790. Acadian settlers later joined them. Its location was an ideal spot for exporting timber from further inland, as well as fishing. There are also numerous peat bogs in the area.
Shippagan is home to campuses of the Universite de Moncton and New Brunswick Community College.
The name "Shippagan" also has two alternative spellings, Shippigan and Shippegan. Both are seen frequently, although Shippagan is now the preferred spelling of the town council.
