[edit] Orochi Saga
Shingo is a mild-mannered student, who studies a lot and goes to high school every day to become somebody in life in the near future. As well as being a high schooler, he is also an avid fan and student under Kyo Kusanagi.
Always having been a fan of Kyo since his participation in the King of Fighters 96' tournament, Shingo could not believe his luck when it turned out to be that Kyo also studied in the same school as he did. Pestering Kyo, he eventually becomes his student and starts learning his attacks through note-taking and analysis.
Shingo trains without rest night and day, and his big chance finally comes when he passes the preliminary battles for the King of Fighters tournament in 1997, and makes it as a single entry. Finally, the Orochi shows itself, but before Kyo goes to his final destiny, Kyo gives Shingo his gloves. [1]

It has been two years since Shingo last saw Kyo. One day, Shingo is approached by Kyo's best friend, Benimaru. Shingo likes to know if Benimaru has any news of Kyo lately, but he has other news: an invitation to participate in the next King of Fighters tournament.
Shingo then meets his new partners, K' and Maxima. He also gets really down when he sees K' wield flames. His question would soon be answered by Krizalid, host of the tournament, who had taken Shingo and his teammates to his underground facility for the final battle. It seems that Krizalid kidnapped Kyo to create clones and infuse both him and K' with Kusanagi power. However, he is about to be eliminated by Krizalid, when all of a sudden, a huge crimson blast fills the room and blows Krizalid away. Kyo had saved him. However, a steel door slams in front of him, and the whole base begins to fall apart. Shingo has no choice but to run. [2]
After training for a whole year, the only problem resides in that neither him nor Benimaru have any idea of how they are going to complete their team for this year's tournament.
One day, Benimaru tells him that an old friend of his will help them out to form the new team. At the meeting place, Shingo finds himself face-to-face against Seth. Along with the man was an ominous ninja who seemed very unfriendly. Shingo kindly introduced himself, but the ninja seemed unimpressed, and in a swift motion, tried to strike Shingo down. Benimaru saves Shingo in the nick of time. [3]
Shingo performs superbly in the tournament, complementing the great work of his partners. Shingo and the others travel to Southtown for the battle, but things begin to go wrong the moment they set foot in the industrial zone: NESTS agents surround the abandoned factory, site of the last match. Forced into a dark room at the back, Shingo realizes that he was set up for a trap by Zero.
Dumbfounded by Zero's plans to use their fighting energy in order to charge up the Zero Cannon, Shingo fights with all his might in order to stop Zero's evil plans. During Zero's defeat, Shingo and the others escape from the unavoidable destruction of Southtown at the hands of the Zero Cannon.
One year later, Shingo is overwhelmed with joy and just can't believe that he will be fighting along his master. [4]
During the final battle against the NESTS cartel, which took place in their main HQ, a space station floating around the planet. As the CEO of NESTS, Igniz, was defeated and the space station crumbled to the sea by his own ambition, Shingo and the others manage to escape to shore. Shingo turned around to meet his shared happiness with his friends, but all he met was with cold shoulders. Shingo was abandoned to his luck, as his partners walk away from the scene. Shingo was left alone until Saisyu Kusanagi approaches him and offers Shingo the chance to become stronger than ever before. [5]

Shingo is a bright, funny, and good natured young man. He is always so jolly, and never seems to get angry. He considers all the fighters as his friends, and everybody sees in him as a weird kid, but a good kid nonetheless. Shingo admires Kyo like an idol, and dedicates his victories to him. However, he also seems to tire due to his inexperience. He always takes out his handbook if he seems to forget a move.

- Shingo Yabuki has a great similarity with Sakura Kasugano from the Street Fighter Series; both are students, both fight in their school uniforms, both wear a headband, both are very cheerful and eager to please, and both want the main character of their respective games to teach them to fight and had been rejected. This similarity was used as a gag in a Capcom vs SNK 4-koma, in which Kyo and Benimaru were debating who to use as their third team member in CvS; Sakura appeared, and they quickly accepted her because she reminded them so much of Shingo. This Capcom vs SNK 4-koma can be viewed at this link with the name of "Team Japan @ CVS"
- During his first appearance in the King Of Fighters 97 he was given the kusanagi gloves by Kyo, and has used them ever since. The gloves are also one of his most treasured things. Which led to a plot error in the continuity of the game. Kyo gave Shingo the gloves after the tournament, but Orochi challenged him exactly after finishing the tournament, and he disappeared; strangely the story says that both things happened. The best explanation is that Kyo gave Shingo the gloves shortly before fighting Orochi.
- As of The King of Fighters 2003, Shingo has been able to randomly produce a small flame spark when performing his 115 Shiki: Dokugami Mikansei (Unfinished Poison Bite) attack. This is attributed to his training with Saisyu Kusanagi after KOF 01'. However, it seems that only Shingo can see this "flame", mainly due to Shingo not being a part of the Kusanagi bloodline. These flames will only appear if Shingo IS NOT teamed with Benimaru or Daimon.
- Similar to above, Shingo's LDM, which is basically one of Kyo's old special moves, can be seen to have flames on it occasionally as well...
- Some people say that Shingo always had potential to throw flames, because in the final of KoF 97´ when he tried to throw a flame, a leaf has fallen from a tree, in the presentation of many of the KoFs of the Orochi saga, when Kyo throws his flames it can be seen a lot of leafs around him, this is what opens this Rumor.
- Shingo is voiced by veteran voice actor Takehito Koyasu, who has also voiced Kenshiro in the new Fist of the North Star OVAs, Kayin Amoh from Toshinden, and Zechs Marquise in Gundam Wing.
- Shingo seems to have a quasi-tradition of "messing-up" a certain special move depending on what game he's in. For example: in '01, it was his DM Burning Shingo, in '02, it was his Unfinished Twlight Heel, and in '03, it was his LDM Shingo Miracle Kick.
- In the ending photo you get for KOF'98, if you use Shingo, King, and Mature on a team, you get a picture of them with their gifts; King with a glass wine, Mature with a snowboard, and poor Shingo gets milk (that he hates).[6] This is because the three of them, according to their profiles, have their birthdays on the same day, April 8.
