Radiata Stories is a video game from developer tri-Ace. It is published by Square Enix in the United States and Japan. Noriyuki Iwadare is the composer.

[edit] Premise and story
The game centers on Jack Russell, orphaned son of Cairn Russell, a general in the Radiata Knights and successful dragon-slayer. Jack leaves his small-town existence, with only his father's sword, the Arbitraitor, and training (passed on to him through his sister Adele), for the capital city of Radiata and the hope of making the Knights as his father did.
Jack makes it into the Knights, but only on the strength of his father's name. He is placed in the Rose Cochon Brigade (translation: Pink Pig), under the command of the upbeat and gung-ho Captain Ganz Rothschild. Also in his unit is the Lady Ridley Silverlake, a highly competent soldier who has a family warrior legacy to maintain and an influential and overprotective stepfather, Lord Jasne. Their first assignment is to act as guards for a shipment from the dwarf village. Soon afterwards, they receive their second mission, to send letters of trade negotiations to the dwarves and then the Light elves. Through a series of mishaps and confusions, Ridley is almost killed by a Blood Orc, but then revived by merging her spirit with that of a dead light elf. This ritual, called transpiritation, is performed by a light elf and ignores elvish prejudices against humans. Back in Radiata, Jasne, furious because of Ridley's injury, uses his political influence to have Jack and Ganz expelled from the Knights, despite the protests of Radiata's prime minister and Commander-in-Chief, Lord Larks. He also has Ridley promoted to captain, in command of more seasoned soldiers who can protect her. Jack finds a new home in Theater Vancoor, a mercenary guild of warriors. Jack quickly passes through the ranks and gains the title of Sergeant. He also grows in favor with the guild's Chief Elwen, and Deputy Chief Gerald, the leaders of Vancoor; he is later chosen by Gerald to be his successor after an incident involving the Princess and the Bandit Guild.
Ridley and Ganz meet with less fortunate circumstances. Ridley feels guilty for Jack's and Ganz' expulsion, particularly because she and Jack, despite initial friction, had developed an attraction to each other. As time passes, she starts to hear voices and feel lightheaded as a result of the Transpiritation ritual. She rebels against the overprotective Jasne and her ambitious fiance, Cross Ward, a high-ranking Radiata Knight. Meanwhile, Ganz was unable to pass Vancoor's entry tests as Jack did, and eventually found himself working alongside two members of Void Community, the bandit guild, named Flau and Rynka, whom took him in.
The people of the kingdom are all the while being plagued by a new disease called Algandars, as it infects more and more people. The disease causes its victims to become irrationally violent and arbitrarily attack other people. It is later found out that the disease originated from a long ago Light Elf king falling in love and mating with a human woman, violating the natural order (known as Tottaus in the game). When it infects light elves, it results in the elf being enveloped in a cocoon and permanently dying, instead of being reincarnated through transpritation after physically dying.
The game progresses and tensions grow between humans and nonhumans. Fairy creatures(referring to all non-human species) including the haughty Light Elves, human-friendly and earthy Dark Elves, spirited Dwarves, Green Goblins, Black Goblins, Green Orcs, and Blood Orcs. Lord Larks, after numerous difficulties in trade relations with the dwarves, finally decides to send out a squadron of Radiata Knights to the Earth Valley, the Dwarf capital during negotiations as a bluff and display of power. However, Cross overreaches his orders and orders the present soldiers to attack. What ensues is a slaughter of the Dwarves with the Knights killing many of them, and enslaving the rest. After this event, Larks is forced to accept that war with the Fairy creatures is inevitable, and prepares the Knights for battle.
The leader of the Dwarves, Gonovitch, who had met with Jack in his first mission, escapes to Radiata to seek Jack's help. When Jack and Gonovitch return to the Dwarven city, they see the Earth Dragon attacking the Knights. As Jack learns, there is a dragon for each of the four classical elements: Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water. The dragon they were seeing was also the guardian of the Dwarves. The Fairy creatures rely on dragons for protection against humans and other forces. The Water dragon was slain by Jack's father years ago, sealing Cairn's reputation as one of the greatest knights to live among humankind. Cross is knocked down and a small stone, most likely given to him by the Royal Advisor Lucian, falls out of his tunic. This stone weakens the dragon considerably, enabling Cross to kill it. Resigned to his fate and determined to share the fate of his people, Gonovitch goes down to the village to be enslaved like his peers.
Days later, Jack is summoned by Larks to the castle for a meeting. That night, as he is about to leave his house, Ridley appears at his door. She expresses remorse for his dismissal from the Knights, then confesses that since the transpiritation, she has not been feeling herself. She says she is going to the City of Flowers, the Light Elf dwelling, and wanted to visit Jack to "make sure she was still human." As she walks out, Jack has a key decision presented to him, that the player must then make: Follow her, and eventually join the Fairy creatures for the war that is about to break out (leading the rest of the game through the "Fairy Path"), or attend the meeting and side with the humans (leading the rest of the game through the "Human Path). Depending on which path is chosen, the storyline for the game is significantly different.

By choosing not to follow Ridley, Jack heads to the castle and learns from Larks that a war is brewing. Since Ridley has deserted the Knights, Jasne has become distraught and powerless; he cannot interfere when Larks reinstates Jack as a Knight. Jack learns from Larks that the greatest threat posed is not from the Fairy creatures themselves, but from the enigmatic dragons protecting them. In order to gain the upper hand in the war, Larks plans to send the leader of the Knights, General Dynas, and Cross, the celebrated slayer of the Earth Dragon, to kill the wind dragon before the Fairy creatures can react.
At Wind Valley, the lair of the Wind dragon, Jack eventually finds Cross and Dynas engaging the beast. After Cross and eventually Dynas are knocked unconscious, Jack slays the dragon. Soon after, Jack learns that the Fairy creatures are being heavily supported by Gawain Rothschild, Ganz' father -- and Cairn Russell's alleged murderer. Enraged, Jack challenges, and is easily struck down by Gawain; only the timely intervention of both Ridley (whom Gawain was there to guard) and Dynas save his life.
As the war continues, Jack and Cross bump heads on several occasions, and develop a rivalry. Meanwhile, the Knights and Larks are mysteriously helped numerous times by Lucian, the Advisor, who has extensive knowledge of the dragons and the Fairy creatures. Jack eventually learns that dragons aren't actually guardians of just the Fairy creatures, but rather, protectors of Tottaus itself. Humans consume resources and expand their territories much faster than the other races, leading to imbalance between the races. Dragons then attack humans to give the Fairy creatures a chance to reclaim their resources, pulling back the balance. If humans become too prolific, or if at any other time the world becomes overly imbalanced, it is then that the two most powerful opposing dragons (Quasar the Gold Dragon and the Aphelion the Silver Dragon) descend upon the land and initiate the end of the world, resetting it.
Eventually Dynas, Cross, and Jack engage and defeat the Fire dragon, at the cost of Dynas' life. With only Jack and Cross left to lead the Knights, Larks takes the advice of Lucian to prepare to wipe out the Fairy creatures once and for all, in an all-out assault on Fort Helencia, the remaing stronghold of the nonhumans. That night, Ridley and Gawain visit Jack, and announce that they will not be taking part in the battle. Ridley is heading south to the Gold Dragon's castle at the "end of the world" to meet her destiny, and Gawain plans to accompany her. Jack later receives a letter from Ganz informing him that Ganz was leaving Radiata and giving him his blessing that he should strike down the one who killed his father, Gawain. As they depart, Gawain tells Jack that a massive contingent of Fairy creatures are planning to attack Radiata. Jack hurries to Larks with this news, and Larks sends Jack and Cross with the remaining troops to defend the town. After a huge battle, Jack manages to kill the Fairy creatures' commander, an orc named Galvados, as well as the Light Elf leader, Zane. After the battle, Lucian reveals himself (to the player) to be Aphelion, the Silver dragon, in disguise. He then flies south, with Cross following in hopes of killing him. Jack, realizing that this is the same direction Ridley went, follows.
On his way to the Gold dragon's castle, Jack meets Gawain and finally defeats him, avenging his father. With his dying words, he congratulates Jack and apologizes for his hardships. Before the moment of his death, however, Jack briefly questions whether his father really did die at the hand of Gawain. Gawain doesn't elaborate, and gently suggests that Jack leave with the satisfaction that he avenged his father.
Jack meets Lucian near the top of the castle tower, and runs with him to the top. Lucian manages to manipulate Jack into taking Ridley away from the Gold dragon. Then appears a dying Cross, but he manages to tell Jack not to trust Lucian. Jack watches as Lucian kills Cross. The now transformed Aphelion then reveals that Ridley was to be Quasar's vessel in which the dragon would reside to end the world. Aphelion then kills Ridley, and claims that he has cast off his duties of protecting the cosmic order in order to allow humans to grow and thrive since they have always been destroyed before they could demonstrate that they could be responsible with their power. In essence, a "new cosmic order has been created." Jack, angered by Ridley's death, fights Aphelion. The fight ends with Aphelion falling and returning to Lucian form. When he queries as to why Jack killed him, Jack responds that it was "his mission" to do so after Ridley's death. With his dying words, the dragon proclaims Jack a champion for freeing humanity from the threat of all dragons -- even himself.
After Aphelion is killed, Jack is proclaimed a hero. By this point, Jack has advanced to the most desirable positions of both Theater Vancoor and the Radiata Knights. He gives both up, however, and the last scene shows Jack leaving Radiata, heading for somewhere else.

Jack, deciding that he has to follow Ridley, accompanies her to the City of Flowers, the capital of the Light Elf territories, where upon arriving, Ridley is captured and taken hostage by the Light Elves' leader, Zane. In order to ensure her safety, Jack agrees to capture a small fort controlled by Radiata Knights, in Zane's name. After taking the fort, he and Ridley were to be held as prisoners of war by Zane as the Elf prepares to launch war on the humans. Parsec, the Fire dragon, commands Zane to free the two. Zane complies, it will be revealed later, because he learns that Ridley is actually the Gold Dragon's human vessel. Parsec then sends Jack and Ridley to a small goblin village, where they encounter none other than Sir Gawain, the comrade of Sir Cairn who disappeared after Cairn's death. Jack defeats Gawain in combat (it is worth noting that Gawain was in fact holding back a great deal) and learns that Gawain didn't really kill Cairn. After slaying the Water dragon, Cairn was infected by Algandars and was in danger of infecting others. He was killed by Light Elf assassins, and Gawain blamed himself for failing to protect Cairn. Saddened his best friend's death, Gawain claimed he was responsible for Cairn's death, which was perceived as a confession to murder. The three return to the fort, and they prove their loyalty to the Fairy creatures by defending the fort against Jack's former Theater Vancoor squadron.
As the war progresses, Jack is given several small but important assignments by various Fairy creatures. He unfortunately receives no help from Gawain or Ridley, as he is busy in strategy planning with Zane, and Ridley falls sick, suffering from more of the symptoms of transpiritation. After hearing of the death of the Wind dragon at the hands of Cross and Dynas, however, the Fairy creatures grow increasingly wary. During one of his visit's to Ridley's room, he hears that now Parsec is under attack. Jack heads to the Dragon's lair only in time to witness his death at the hands of Dynas and Cross. Enraged, Jack attacks Cross, but is beaten almost to his death by the Knight. After Gawain steps in, Dynas reasserts control of Cross, and they return to the castle. Jack is extremely depressed at this point, failing to defend the dragons, staying by Ridley's side, and he also starts to worry about his sister. It is at this point that Ganz re-enters the game, telling Jack of all the things he's endured since being dismissed from the Knights. He also introduces the people behind him, who've helped him thus far: Rynka, Flau, and also Adele, whom they managed to rescue while leaving Radiata. It is also here that it's revealed that Cross was responsible for the Blood Orc attack that nearly killed Ridley, and Jack swears revenge. He wishes to start training his swordsmanship, as Gawain takes him aside and presents him with the Arbitrator, Sir Cairn's sword, that he himself has carried around since leaving home.
Soon, the fort falls under attack by Cross and a large force of Knights. Jack battles Cross again, this time coming out the victor, but is prevented from dealing the final blow by Ridley, who does not wish to see him become a murderer. Gawain and Dynas eventually reason with Jack to allow Cross his life, and the two Generals talk but fail to reach a middle ground. Afterwards, before they reach Radiata, Cross kills Dynas and blames the whole ordeal on Jack and the Fairy creatures. Ridley realizes that it is almost time for Quasar to awaken and heads south with Gawain to "the end of the world". She expresses great concern for Jack not to come, so he doesn't accompany her, but ends up following her at a distance with Ganz.
Upon arriving at the City of White Nights, the enigmatic ruin which houses the Gold Dragon's castle, he sees the Silver dragon flying toward the castle, as well as Cross, who has come to kill the dragon. Jack defeats Cross a second time, but refuses to kill him because both Ridley and Dynas had stepped in to save his life before. Aphelion, however, finishes Cross from above and proceeds to the top of the castle. Startled, Jack and Ganz follow suit and race to the summit. They see Ridley and the ghostly form of Quasar, the Gold dragon, behind her. They attempt to comfort Ridley as she begins to absorb Quasar's consciousness. Aphelion appears and attempts to kill the trio, but Gawain appears in a deus ex machina moment, and dies taking the blow that was meant for Ridley. Ridley, begrieved at seeing her friend perish, gives in to her human emotions and expels Quasar's consciousness. Aphelion, though Quasar's awakening has been stopped, still decides to kill Ridley. Furious, Jack and Ganz defend the girl and counterattack the dragon, and the epic battle of the game ensues. They eventually strike him down. Aphelion, with his final breath, crushes the foundations of the castle in an attempt to kill the trio in the ruins of the structure. Jack and Ridley escape with their lives, but Ganz stays behind with his father's body.
After the war, Jack and Ridley hold hands and enter the city headed for the castle.

- Jack Russell: A brown-haired, 16-year old boy with a smart mouth. The son of Cairn Russell, Jack Russell grew up in the rural outskirts of Radiata Kingdom. He aspires to become a Radiata Knight and when he is accepted into the knights (not for his ability, but his heritage) he becomes part of the Rose Cochon Brigade. After expulsion from the knights, he joins Theater Vancoor and quickly becomes a sergeant, and eventually is chosen to be Deputy Gerald's successor. Although he is generally oblivious to Ridley's affection at first, he soon begins having feelings of his own. In both paths, he kills Aphelion and sets out on a journey.
- Ridley Silverlake: Blonde and 15-year old,(she turns 16 in the course of the game), Ridley is brusque and intolerant of inefficiency, frequently snapping at Jack for his blunders and happy-go-lucky attitude (although she later appears to have deep feelings for him). Born into a family of nobles, she was trained to be a knight at a very young age. Her father, Lord Jasne Colton, has a different last name because the Silverlake name is inherited by blood. She later becomes the vessel of the gold dragon Quasar.
- Ganz Rothschild: A stout, blond man, is a peaceful but somewhat unreliable knight captain. Hailing from the Rothchilds' clan, the Lions of the West, Ganz was raised according to the genteel traditions of all great houses. Ganz has been a bit spoiled by his upbringing, but is a respected leader nonetheless. His own father, Gawain, is presumed missing in action. He is found often over-excited or silly, making him the comic relief on several occasions. After expulsion from the knights, he found work with Void, a group of bandits. In the Non-human path he joins the Fairy creatures in the hopes of reuniting with his father.
- Aphelion: The Silver dragon and former protector of the cosmic order, Aphelion serves as the primary antagonist of both paths. His goals (protection of the human race and all of civilizaton) are noble, but his methods of murdering the fairy creatures and manipulation are less so. He plans to achieve his goals by preventing the gold dragon Quasar from descending to earth. In both paths, he achieves his goal (in Human Path by killing Ridley, and in Fairy Path by indirectly causing her to give in to humanity); however, he pays for his victory with his life. His human vessel is a handsome, black-haired man named Lucian, who he uses to manipulate Larks into declaring war, thus ensuring the deaths of his fellow dragons.
- Lord Larks: Radiata's Prime Minister and Knights Commander-in-Chief. He is a soft-spoken man, who places his duties above all else. He values the advice of Lucian a great deal; as Lucian is really Aphelion's vessel, he allows himself to be manipulated into being a tool of Aphelion's plot. When he learns of the Silver Dragon's identity, he realizes that the entire war (and all its casualties) were meaningless, and resolves to not ever allow himself be controlled again. In both paths, he keeps his life.
- Gawain Rothschild: Ganz's father, a middle-aged man with an enormous red mohawk. He was Cairn Russell's best friend, and for a great while was thought to be his murderer. He has the majority support of the Fairy creatures, and allows himself to become their general. He serves as a major foil to Jack in Human Path (in which he is eventually killed by the boy), but in Fairy Path he is a mentor and source of inspiration to him, eventually sacrificing his life to Aphelion in order to protect Jack, Ridley and Ganz.
- Cross Ward: A purple armored, silver-haired, rash young Radiata Knight, and Ridley's former fiancee. He has great distaste for the fairy creatures and dragons, and responds to them solely with violence. In Human Path, he eventually teams up with Jack to slay the rest of the dragons. In Fairy Path, however, he serves as a major foe to Jack and the fairy creatures in general, and in their first encounter beats Jack almost to his death. In both paths he is eventually killed by Aphelion.
- General Dynas: The General of the Radiata Knights, Dynas is a powerful (bald) man who actually prefers negotiating to fighting. He is ethical and strict, and always attempts to resolve conflicts peacefully before sending out his armies. Despite this pacifist nature, he is an incredibly powerful warrior, perhaps rivalling Sir Gawain in combat. In Human Path, he gives his life protecting Cross from the fire dragon, while in Fairy Path, he is killed by Cross himself in order to allow the Knight to usurp his position.
- Lord Zane: The green-haired leader of the elves, Zane despises humans with a passion and uses the war as an excuse to kill as many humans as possible. Zane hates humans so much so that even when Jack captured the fort in his name in Fairy Path, he still refused to allow him into his army until he learned that Ridley was Quasar's vessel. He prefers to plan strategically behind the lines instead of attacking enemies himself, but still joins in in the final battle in Human Path, where he is defeated by Jack. In Fairy Path, he is also infected by the Algandars disease, and though we do not see his death, it is possible that he will soon succumb to the disease.
- Chief Elwen: This mysterious, iron-clad woman is the head of Theater Vancoor, and is the most powerful warrior on Earth, augmented by the fact she wields the divine sword Avcoor as her weapon. Elwen is very enigmatic, and seems to know a great deal about the dragons, even conversing with the fire dragon Parsec personally. She often visits what appears to be a lost love's grave underneath Radiata.
- Deputy Gerald: A one-eyed, brunette man with a temper, he is Elwen's second-in-command. He has taken an interest in Jack, and eventually chooses the boy to be his successor. Gerald seems to have a connection with Nocturne, a high-ranking Void thief.
- Parsec: The fire dragon and seemingly an old friend of Elwen's. Parsec is happy-go-lucky, and does not mind enlisting humans to help him. His human vessel is a large, red-haired man who is always seen with a match in mouth. In both paths, he is killed; in Human Path, Parsec is slain by Jack, while in the Fairy Path he meets his end at Cross' hand.
[edit] Gameplay
Radiata Stories places great emphasis on its persistent world and non-player characters. The capital city of Radiata alone boasts over 100 occupants (about as many as some entire games have), each with their own lives, lifestyles, jobs, personalities, homes, dialogues and schedules, which are enhanced by the game's Day/Night system. Outlying towns and settlements, including the "fairy" (non-human) cities where Light Elves, Dark Elves, Blood Orcs, Green Orcs, Dwarves and Green and Black Goblins live, are much smaller, but their occupants are likewise personalized. Finally, Radiata is home to Radiata Castle and its Knights of the realm, not to mention four Guilds (the Theater Vancoor Warrior Guild, the Bandits' Void Community, the monkish Olacion Order, and the Vareth Institute of Mages), which provide some flavor to its inhabitants.
Of these NPCs, 177 of them are recruitable. Some need only to be talked to, some must be placated with fetch quests, some dueled, and some must judge Jack to be of a certain strength (in terms of levels) before they will agree to place themselves on his "Friends list," at which point the player may include them in Jack's party at (almost) any time. (See the wikisource for a wiki for help in getting them all.) The Friends List also provides handy capsule biographies for each character. It is impossible to complete everything during any one time through the game, as a decision mid-way through the game forces Jack to choose between his human and fairy allies.
Unlike a great deal of other role-playing games, there is no overworld map. Battles takes place on a separate screen in real time, though monsters appear on the world screen. The player has direct control of Jack's movement and actions in all three dimensions, though bringing up menus pauses the action. Jack is the only character the player can ever control; all other party members are run by the in-game AI. The player can issue commands to individual party members, and the entire party can be ordered into tactical formations via the "Link System."
NPC party members can strengthen their single passive skill, but do not learn new active abilities or learn new ones, and cannot be given new weapons, armors and accessories, so skills and equipment are a significant criteria in choosing one's teammates. There is also no "magic" stat, forcing the player to constantly recruit new party members as magic (healing) spells do not increase in power whatsoever.
Finally, the game provides the novel ability to kick anything in sight. Kicking furniture and other inanimate objects will occasionally turn up items or Dagols (the local currency). Kicking some NPCs several times will cause them to fight Jack, or summon guards to fight for or with them. Jack gains experience and dagol, and possibly items when he wins these duels, but will not Game Over if he loses them. Jack may only duel a character once each day. Other than a single comment at the end of the duel, the character's behavior is unchanged after the duel.

- The protagonist, Jack Russell, is named after the Terrier dog breed.
- His father's name, Cairn, is also a breed of Terrier, and so is his sister's name in the Japanese version, Airedale, which was changed into Adele in the translation.
- Considering that Tri-Ace made this game, some references to other Tri-Ace games can be found, but seldom have any significant influence in the game. Examples: Ganz sometimes wears Star Ocean 2's Claude C. Kenni's clothes, and there is a somewhat hidden quick scene where Jack Russell can obtain Fayt Armor, which changes his appearance to Fayt Leingod from Star Ocean 3. Also of note, the character of Lenneth Valkyrie from Valkyrie Profile appears as a recruitable character, and another character from the same game, Lezard Valeth, appears as a bonus boss. Finally, a BGM track that made appearances in both Star Ocean 2, Star Ocean 3 and Valkyrie Profile is present in this game: "The Incarnation of Devil". "Highbrow", a track from Star Ocean 3 is also remixed for this game.
- The theme song to the Japanese version of the game, "Fortune", was sung by JPop star Nami Tamaki, who also played a recruitable party character of the same name in the game. She is also available in the English Version of the game, but unfortunately, the theme song she sings is cut entirely in the game. She can be met in a club located near the bandits area of Radiata Castle, where she sings at a certain time everyday (for the japanese version, the BGM of the club house is actually 'Fortune' being played.
- Ridley Silverlake's mother is named Sigourney Silverlake. Sigourney Weaver is the name of the actress who played as the protagonist in the movie Alien, Ellen Ripley. The movie was directed by Sir Ridley Scott.
- Though completely unrelated, there are two characters in Radiata Stories named Cecil and Kain, who share names with two characters from Square Enix's Final Fantasy IV. This may be a coincidence, or it may have been placed as a teaser, as Square Enix published Radiata Stories.
- Ganz is useable as a NPC after the player beats Aphelion on the Fairy Path even though he stayed behind with his father's body and seemed to have died.
