Nova Scotia Highway 111
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nova Scotia Highway 111 is a 4-12 lane freeway known informally as the Dartmouth "Circumferential Highway". The highway runs from Pleasant Street in the neighbourhood of Woodside in the south to the A. Murray MacKay Bridge in the north to Halifax and serves as a key transportation link for Dartmouth. The highway from Highway 118 - Woodland Ave. was built at the same time as the MacKay bridge development, opening in 1970. The portion from Pleasant Street to Woodland Ave was built in the mid 1960's and was twinned in 1977.

[edit] Access to Highways 102 and 103
The MacKay Bridge, as maintained by the Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission, is not officially part of Highway 111, but can be considered as an extension of it. A truck route through the former city of Halifax, from the MacKay Bridge along Connaught Street to Bayers Road near Highway 102, is signed sporadically with Highway 111 markers, but is also not officially part of the route.
[edit] Traffic volume
Traffic volumes on portions of Highway 111 are in excess of 60,000 vehicles per day.
[edit] Micmac Rotary
An infamous traffic circle was located at the intersection with Highway 111 and local roads Highway 318 (Braemar Drive/Waverley Road), Highway 7 (Main Street/Prince Albert Road/Graham's Grove Road). Named the "Micmac Rotary" (after nearby Lake Micmac), the rotary was removed during a redesign of the intersection in the early 1990s which saw it replaced by the "Micmac Parclo", which consists of a series of overpasses and controlled access lanes. The resulting roadway through the Parclo and across Lake Mic Mac to the interchange with Highway 118 is the widest in the province at 10-12 lanes.
