The 49ers defeated the Packers, who had eliminated them from the playoffs in each of the past 3 seasons, in one of the wildest, back-and-forth games in league history. Trailing 23-20 with 2 minutes remaining, Packers Quarterback Brett Favre lofted a 15-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman, completing a drive that had seen the Packers run a risky 4th-and-1 play from deep in their own territory and Favre completing a long pass to seldom-used rookie receiver Corey Bradford. But San Francisco responded with an equally impressive drive behind Quarterback Steve Young, who completed 7-of-9 passes in a 75-yard drive for the winning score. Receiver Terrell Owens, who dropped four passes and had a fumble, caught the 25-yard winning touchdown pass with three seconds left in the game (a.k.a. The Catch II). This drive was also aided by a non-call on an apparent fumble by Jerry Rice.^{[citation needed]}

Denver dominated the Dolphins as Broncos running back Terrell Davis ran for 199 yards, caught a pass for 7 yards, and scored 2 touchdowns in the first quarter. John Elway threw for 182 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown pass to Rod Smith, and rushed for 19 yards, while defensive end Neil Smith returned a fumble 79 yards for a touchdown in the final period to close out the scoring. Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino threw for 243 yards, but could not lead his team to a single touchdown and was intercepted twice. Miami's lone score was a 22-yard field goal by Olindo Mare in the second quarter.

Running back Robert Smith led the Vikings to a victory as he ran for a team-playoff-record 124 yards and caught 2 passes for 14 yards. Fullback Leroy Hoard scored 3 touchdowns, while quarterback Randall Cunningham completed 17 of 27 passes for 236 yards and 3 touchdowns with 1 interception. Arizona quarterback Jake Plummer threw for more yards then Cunningham, but was intercepted twice. Running back Mario Bates scored 3 touchdowns, but had only 4 rushing yards.

After Minnesota kicker Gary Anderson missed a field goal with two minutes to play in the fourth quarter (his first miss of the season), and Vikings DB Dwayne Rudd dropped an interception in the endzone, the Falcons tied it up on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Mathis. In overtime, Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler, on a bad ankle, drove 70 yards to set up Morten Andersen's 38-yard field goal that put Atlanta in the Super Bowl for the first time in team history. It was a shocking and devastating loss for the Vikings, who became the first 15-1 team in NFL history to not reach the Super Bowl. Fox Sports ranked it the third most exciting NFC Championship Game ever. Chandler had one of the best games of his career, throwing for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns. Vikings quarterback Randall Cunningham also had a superb performance, throwing for 266 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also rushing for 13 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

In John Elway's last home game of his career, he completed only 13 of 34 passes. However, running back Terrell Davis, the NFL MVP in 1998, ran for 167 yards and a touchdown, and Denver capitalized on 6 turnovers by the Jets to overcome a 10-0 deficit. Jets running back Curtis Martin was held to just 14 rushing yards on 13 carries.
