Neidar

In the Dragonlance campaign setting, the Neidar is a clan of dwarves, cousins to the various clans of mountain dwarves in Thorbardin.

The dwarves traces their roots to the time when some gnomes were magically changed thanks to the power of the Graygem of Gargath. Those gnomes who were curious about the Graygem were transformed into Kender. The ones who wanted to obtain the Gem for the wealth it represented were turned into dwarves.
Dwarves eventually split off into various clans who (usually) worked together for mutual benefit. A confederation of clans arose, forming into government of a Council of Thanes, led by a High King. This is still the mode of government in Thorbardin.
After the Cataclysm, a good portion of farmland were swallowed by Newsea, or turned into desert. Old trade routes were disrupted, and roving bands of hungry robbers and refugees forced Thorbardin to make a fateful decision. They sealed the mountain kingdom, cutting off Abanasinia from the rest of Ansalon, but more importantly, barring their starving and frightened Neidar cousins out.
To be fair, Thorbardin had barely enough food to feed themselves. But agitators within the Neidar clan believed that the mountain dwarves had plenty of food but were cruel enough to not care about the hill dwarves plight. This growing animosity between the two groups exploded into war with the help of a Black-Robe wizard: Fistandantilus.
The Dwarfgate War was short and sharp, and bitter as wars within a people tend to be. Thorbardin on one side, Neidar and their mercenary allies on the other, the last major battle was fought to the very threshold of Northgate. Kharas the Wise was said to have wept even as he killed his fellow dwarves. The battle ended with a magical explosion, a spell that virtually destroyed both armies, effectively ending the war. The battle resulted in the Neidar retreating, and the death of High King Duncan's son. When Duncan finally died, the position of High King remained empty until the War of the Lance.
The Neidar returned to the foothills, and eventually thrived. Trade among the elves of Qualinesti and the humans of Haven and Solace increased, and new routes opened with better shipping across Newsea.
