"Message in a Bottle" is the name of the th episode of Star Trek: Voyager, the fourteenth episode of the fourth season.
After successfully extending the range of Voyagers sensors, Seven of Nine located a network of alien sensor stations; patching into this, she was able to locate a Federation vessel on the far reaches of the Alpha Quadrant, the USS Prometheus. Voyager's crew attempted to send a message along the relay, but it was reflected back to them after degrading en route; theorising that a holographic signal would be stronger, and not degrade so quickly, their EMH was transmitted instead.
Upon arrival, the Doctor discovered that Romulans had taken over the ship. Being pursued by a Nebula Class vessel the USS Bonchune, the Romulans initiated the first test of the new Multi-vector assault mode, in which Prometheus split into three separate pieces in order to engage hostile ships.
Seeking assistance, The Doctor activates the ship's own EMH, a Mk II of the program (Andy Dick). The second EMH cited protocol for the EMH to deactivate when its vessel was taken over, but Voyager's noted that as both ships were at stake, they did not have that luxury.
Using the pretense of an infection on board, Voyager's EMH went to the bridge in an effort to open the atmospheric filters, in order to flood the entire ship with anaesthezine gas, to knock the Romulans unconscious. The ruse failed, but captured and interrogated, the EMH kept the Romulans stalled long enough for the EMH Mk II to fool the ship's computer into opening the filters, permitting the distribution of the gas.
Unfortunately, by the time they had taken control, Prometheus had reached the designated rendezvous point, and three D'deridex class warbirds were ready to take delivery. Unfamiliar with the helm and weapons systems, the EMH programs unsuccessfully attempted to fool the Romulans into leaving, before three more Starfleet vessels arrived, to retake their ship. In the ensuing battle, all six other vessels were targeting Prometheus, and only a lucky accident when the EMH Mk II leant on a console resulted in the engagement of the Multi-vector assault mode, the ship's computer successfully destroying a Romulan warbird. With that loss, the Romulans retreated, and a Starfleet security detail transported over to the Prometheus.
Meanwhile, the Hirogen, owners of the sensor array, had contacted Voyager, and demanded they cease their use of it. Although Seven had initiated a feedback loop, temporarily incapacitating the Hirogen threatening them, he had earlier disconnected their connection to the network. Fortunately, when The Doctor attempted to return, it was functional, and he materialised in sickbay, to inform the crew that he had updated Starfleet on their situation, removed them from the official 'lost' list, and that he had a message; they were no longer alone.
