Master of Theological Studies

A Master of Theological Studies (MTS) is a two-year first theological degree offered by several seminaries and divinity schools. The degree is generally equivalent to a Master of Arts degree in religious studies. Unlike the Master of Divinity, the Master of Theological Studies is an academic degree, and its goal is not to prepare one for ordination. As such, it does not necessarily include field education or coursework in ministry studies. It usually requires the completion of a scholarly thesis. The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada accredits many such programs.
