Hi Lockley,

Thanks for your help with LeBrun. He and his sons are certainly someone who needed to be added to the Wikipedia world.

Best,

[edit] Action Park

Thank you for the compliment.

I was inspired to write the article after reading the Weird NJ article mentioned in the references section. Yes, I also visited Action Park myself; it was, as I said, something of a rite of passage for anyone growing up in the Greater New York area to go there at at least one point in their teens or early twenties (I went in about 1986, 1987 or so ... I can't remember exactly, except that it was near the end of the summer and I had either graduated high school ... no, wait it was 1986 then).

Did I know it was dangerous? No, actually, even though I was a pretty regular reader of the papers at the time. I had heard about the death on the Kayak ride, but that was four years before. It wouldn't have scared me, as people kept going to Great Adventure after the Haunted Mansion fire, which killed more people than Action Park ever did. Of course, as the article suggests, it was difficult for people who lived elsewhere in the state (i.e., most of us at the time) to fully appreciate how dangerous it was at the time.

OTOH, we took my brother, who had just been diagnosed with the Hodgkin's disease that would kill him six years later, and when my mother mentioned it to his doctors in New York City they seriously freaked out: "You took him where? Do you know how many people get hurt there?" Only afterwards when I mentioned it to my dad did he tell me how many accidents and lawsuits happened there (and on waterslides in general).

People went because, again borrowing from the Weird NJ article, it offered you more control over your experience, so you had some feeling of responsibility if things went wrong. I remember deciding after looking at Surf Hill that I was not going on it ... I was clearly over the posted weight limit, and yet I saw people heavier than me going down it and just as clearly saw the potential for serious injury. But otherwise I had a great day.

Funny thing ... I went back there a couple of summers ago with my wife and son (to the water rides which are now Mountain Creek Water Park, and mostly intact from those days) and she got injured ... a nasty bruise on her butt from one of the more extreme waterslides.

Again, I'm glad you liked the article ... I didn't intend for it to get so long but I'm glad I did. I wish I had a bit more references than I do (the descriptions of a lot of the rides are personal memories, mostly, and while I don't know if anyone would call me on it they might be considered original research. I'm glad it's so detailed ... it's probably the longest article in Category:Defunct amusement parks, which includes Dogpatch USA, a (deserving) featured article.

I wish I had more for it (like some images ... that looping waterslide is (ahem) the kicker but I doubt I'd get permission, especially since a grayscale version illustrates the Weird NJ story), to some day support an FA bid or something, but for now I'll have to be satisfied with what I wrote.

From your user page you seem to have a professional interest or something in this sort of thing. If you want to know more, I could email you a copy of the Weird NJ article (you seem to be in Arizona, so it may not be available at bookstores out there). Daniel Case 03:35, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gretna, Scotland

Why have you made Gretna, Scotland redirect to Gretna Green again? Gretna Green is a village while Gretna is a seperate town, although they are near to each other? I won't change it back yet but could I have an explanation? Gretnagod 14:10, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

  • I've started a proper page for Gretna, Scotland, please expand or correct as you see fit. Judging from your username, you might know more about it than I (smile). --Lockley 05:19, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sorting key and diacritics

[1] It is better to avoid using diacritics for category sorting key because current system on English Wikipedia always places diacritics after standard English alphabet characters. This sometimes makes the result looking quite funny.

[edit] Kathleen Lake

Only found it because it's on the dead end pages list. I'm still expecting someone to tell me it's a mix up and it's actually in South Carolina. The only lake by this name I could find is in the Yukon. —Wknight94 (talk) 04:01, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Citizenship in the World Merit Badge

Hi! You have argued for deletion of the Citizenship in the World Merit Badge article on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Citizenship in the World Merit Badge. I've cleaned the article somewhat to give it context and grammar, so that it is no longer nonsense. Might you consider redirection instead of deletion? -- Jonel | Speak 04:02, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comment Regarding The Forelli Brothers

Hi Lockley, 6 minutes ago (wow), you nominated The Forelli Brothers for prod deletion. I've since merged the article with "Sonny Forelli", which is actually a redirect to List of characters in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. If you disagree, don't hesitate to contact me through my talk page. Happy editing! Kareeser|Talk! 17:48, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Your work reverting page blanking is appreciated =)

[edit] Harold Van Buren Magonigle

Congrats Lockley, you scooped me on H Van Buren M. I expect to be adding a few projects in the not-too-distent future. Life is good. Carptrash 00:30, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nice job

on your Churrigueresque article. I have some oldish books on Spanish architecture that MIGHT be pre 1923 [though 1926 might be a better quess] and so have some usable pictures. The other place where Churrigueresque is found is in South America, about which I know a little, having spent all of 10 days there. However I might have a reference or two and even a shot or two. There is some fun American stuff too. I'll see what I can dig up. Thanks for alerting me. Now back to my Icelandic sculptors. Carptrash 06:22, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

I did a quickie on the Churriguera family to get risd on that red ink, which is not all that satisfying, but a start. I'll try to fill out your article a bit, but was disapointed in my Spanish books. Life can play some cruel tricks on us. Carptrash 08:04, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Robin Boyd

I added an awards section to the Robin Boyd biography. Since you are 1) the last person to edit it and 2) someone who clearly knows a lot more about the topic than I do, I'd appreciate if you'd take a look at it and add any major awards that I missed (which I probably did). Thanks. JoshuaZ 06:43, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fifth Marian Dogma

I added a note on the AfD, but I just want to say what a great job you did on this article. The earlier version might have been regarded as unsalvageable by some people. Fan1967 00:54, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] about "Holly" in the name of William H. Whyte

Hi, I notice that "holly" is inserted into the name of William H. Whyte. Could you please let me know why? Thanks. --Neo-Jay 15:53, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. After I read the sources you provid, it seems to me that "Holly" is just another expression of "Hollingsworth", Whyte's middle name. Correct? Is so, it is not accute to write his name as William Hollingsworth "Holly" Whyte. And we can discuss at the Talk Page of Whyte. Thanks. --Neo-Jay 05:17, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Peer review requested for Deconstructivism

Hey there, I was wondering if you would be at all interested in peer reviewing Deconstructivism. We have got it to a stage where some criticism would be beneficial and we'd be very grateful for your input. Many thanks --Mcginnly 11:59, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding the General Electric Building

I just want to make you aware that in your website you claim that this building is in the corner of Lexington & 51st street in Downtown Manhattan, but 51st street is in Midtown Manhattan which is actually a bigger commercial center than Downtown. Just wanted for you to know, nice website though.

  • Thanks for your feedback and the complement. --Lockley 20:52, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Architecture Wikiproject

Hi, many thanks for all your architecture and design edits. I was wondering if you might be interested in joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Architecture. [edit] Image:Carson-pirie-scott store.jpg

Hi Lockley. The photo of the Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building has been moved to Commons, but because of incomplete licensing information the photo might have to be deleted. It seems to me that you have found it at the Historic American Buildings Survey website, do you remember the url? If you have the necessary information, can you update the information at commons:Image:Carson-pirie-scott store.jpg? Sincerely, --Kjetil_r 00:59, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
