Mt Kriváň, located within Tatranský Národný Park, is traditionally considered to be a Slovak national symbol. Probably due to its striking shape, it appears in many legends and fairy tales. It has also served as inspiration for various writers and painters. Historically, it was the target of "national" trips made by the followers of Ľudovít Štúr and an important place during the Slovak National Uprising.
Kriváň as an official symbol was introduced by the Communists to replace the traditional (and today's) Slovak coat of arms within the then coat of arms of Czechoslovakia. In December 2005, it was chosen to become one of Slovakia's symbols on the euro coins.
