"Hallowed Be Thy Name" is a song written by Steve Harris for the 1982 Iron Maiden album The Number of The Beast.
The song describes a man thoughts just before being sent to the gallows. At first he feels terror but then he comes to realise that he is not afraid to die ...tears they flow but why am I crying, after all I am not afraid of dying. This is one of Iron Maiden's most popular songs, and some believe that it may be the greatest metal song of all time.[1] Hallowed Be Thy Name begins with a slow tempo and builds up later in the song. Bruce Dickinson showcases his wide vocal range and power at both slow and fast tempo. This song is considered an Iron Maiden classic, and it is played at almost every live appearance they make.
The fact that it was not on the Edward the Great Greatest Hits album outraged many fans in 2002 [citation needed], and this was not changed for the 2005 re-release when the track listing was changed. It was not originally released as a single because it was too long for chart inclusion, thus not making it qualify as a 'greatest hit'.
The song has also been released as a live single from the 1993 album "A Real Live Dead One", and has become a live staple for Iron Maiden.
