In the film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Gorkon was the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire and leader of its High Council in the late 23rd Century, until his assassination. The character was played by actor David Warner.
In an historic peace initiative, Gorkon sought the help of the Federation after the devastating ecological and economic fallout from the destruction of the Klingon moon Praxis.
Gorkon's assassination took place aboard the Klingon battle cruiser Kronos One in interstellar space and was masterminded by Klingon General Chang and Starfleet Admiral Cartwright. Clutching his hopes for peace to the end, his last words were "Don't let it end this way." Captain James T. Kirk and Doctor Leonard McCoy were framed and sentenced for the crime but later exonerated.
Gorkon was familiar with the works of William Shakespeare, quoting Hamlet. In contrast with the rugged fashion customarily worn in Klingon society, Gorkon wore rich blacks and reds accented with silver jewelry, giving him a regal stature. Because of Gorkon's accomplishments and the honour with which he is regarded, he is most likely thought of as having joined Kahless in Sto-Vo-Kor. Gorkon's daughter, Azetbur, succeeded him as Chancellor.
The writers of the film envisioned Gorkon as something of a cross between Mikhail Gorbachev and Abraham Lincoln.

- Gorkon is the name of a Federation Excelsior-class starship, NCC-40512. The Gorkon was used as a flagship by Admiral Alynna Nechayev.
- Gorkon is also the name of a Chancellor-class Klingon starship, commanded by Captain Klag.
