Dandenong railway station was first opened in 1877 as one of the original stations on the Melbourne-Sale railway line.
The station underwent a massive redevelopment in the 1990s, to its current design of the bright yellow overpass attached to three service platforms. Dandenong is a Zone 3 Metcard station.
Dandenong Station is a premium station, meaning it is staffed from first train to the last each day. Dandenong serves as the juncture point between the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. Two tracks continue towards Pakenham while the remaining single track branches towards Cranbourne.
Dandenong is also a major stopping point for trains continuing down the Gippsland line, proceeding through Pakenham before finally terminating at Bairnsdale.
