[edit] Introduction

  • Buffy comics. These were published by Dark Horse, originally in comic format but then gathered into volumes of trade paperbacks. They were published from 1998 until 2004. A small number of Buffy comics have not been included in trade paperbacks. These include the comics: Giles, Jonathan, and Reunion. The cover art of the individual comic covers can be found here.
  • Angel comics. Dark Horse published two Angel comic series. The first was halted after 17 issues while the second series lasted only four issues. Since June 2005, IDW have published mini-series and one shots.
  • Tales of the Vampires trade paperback stories. This comprises an anthology of short stories written by Joss Whedon, Jane Espenson, and other writers of the Buffy TV shows. Each story tells the tale of one or more Whedonverse vampires.
  • Tales of the Slayers trade paperback stories. This is an anthology of short stories written by Joss Whedon, Jane Espenson, and others. Like the prose short stories, each of these surrounds a different slayer from the past.
  • Unofficial parody. There has been a sexually explicit satirical graphic novel, Boffy the Vampire Layer, which is not officially licensed as Buffy merchandise by 20th Century Fox. It was published by Eros Graphic Albums in 2002.

[edit] Canonical issues

Main article: Buffyverse canon

The vast majority of comics featured in this list are not part of Buffyverse canon. That means they are not considered as official Buffyverse reality, but are stories from the writers' imaginations. However, all of these stories have been licensed as official Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Angel merchandise. Furthermore the overall concept for each Buffyverse story had to be accepted by Joss Whedon (or his office), who did not want these stories to venture too far from his original intentions. A few of the comics were written by members of Mutant Enemy Productions including Joss Whedon.

[edit] Buffy

Joss Whedon has also stated that a canonical Buffy comic series will be released.[1] This series will be an official continuation of the original television show's story and will serve as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8". They will proably tie in to a Spike movie if that project is greenlit. The comics will be released from March 2007 onwards[2], with art by Georges Jeanty and covers by Jo Chen.

Blair Marnell announced on his 'All the Rage' column some things he had heard about the series in July 2006:

"I’ve heard a few things about the forthcoming Buffy season eight comics. As Whedon himself noted a few weeks ago, the first mini is going to be four issues and he is also laying out the story for the rest of the season. I’ve been told that the storyline is roughly 20 issues, spread across multiple miniseries and that Whedon will be recruiting some of his former Buffy writers to handle the bulk of the writing chores, though Whedon may return to write the “season finale” himself."[3]
