[edit] Perl script to separate red and blue links for WP:MEA

I am currently looking for help (a perl script) to parse and separate red and blue links for various lists at Missing encyclopedic articles. I have made a request at Wikipedia:Computer_help_desk#New_cases, but it has languished for over a week. There was a script that does some of what we need it to do developed by Avar, but it only works on a few of the many lists we are currently working on. Specifically I'm looking for something that would separate and sort a list like this:

1. Link 1 External search for link 1 Comment about link 1 with link to another article]

   Second nested comment

• Wrongly nested comment

1. Link2 Notice space has been removed
2. Link3] Malformed links with [malformed link

This is a worst case example. The current script works well, but it evaluates link by link, not line by line and so [comments] about the link would be removed.

See separting reds and blues for more comments.

• Merge Category:Natural hazards into Category:Natural disasters All of the subcategories in Category:Disasters could be moved into Category:Natural disasters, Category:Man-made disasters, or both. Since this would leave Category:Disasters with only two subcategories, I would recommend skipping these two categories, and putting anything that would be in the two of them directly in Category:Disasters. Refile all the "abstract" articles on disaster, like Disaster and Catastrophe into Category:Disaster from Category:Disasters. The remaining articles would make a nice Category:Disaster response, or combined with Category:Disaster preparation, a good Category:Disaster preparation and response (since there seems to be a fair amount of overlap among articles about making disaster plans vs. implementing them).
• Make sure Wikipedia:Category clearly explains how to add and remove articles from categories, and how to create, delete, and rename categories.
• Automate updates to Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias open tasks, using Template:CSBArticles?
• Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Science

[edit] Re Bluebot + tags

Hi, basically bluebot tags with {{wikify-date|xxx}} or {{stub}} as when it comes across those articles while doing other tasks, most often this is when it is bolding the first occurrance of the title. For a while I had it scanning new pages as well, which was fairly successful, but I don't leave my computer on all the time, and it was tagging sooo many as wikify (many of which would get deleted) that I began to think it was better to just work off database scans, as these tended to be older, and therefore less likely to be copyvios or other candidates for deletion. The criteria for adding a tag used to be calculated from the number of links dived by article length, but I found this doesnt work too well, so now it only tags if there are less than 4 links as well. thanks Martin 10:43, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Also, it has been my ambition to get every article that needs it to be tagged with {{wikify}}, but there are soo many that it would be too much to do them all in one go, I was aiming to do a few thousand a month. Maybe we should set a target for the size of each wikify-by-month category? I would say 3000 is probably about right. Martin 14:52, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

I noticed you have recently tagged some articles for moving to Wikisource. I wanted to talk to you especially about the splitting off of data from and article and then tagging it for WS. The English Wikisource community has recently decided to exclude all data and reference material which is not attached to a larger work available on Wikisource. Although we have not yet deleted the material which currently exists at WS, please be aware this sort of material will no longer be accepted. --Birgitte§β ʈ Talk 03:52, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't remember doing this recently; which articles do you mean? Is this new policy explained somewhere on Wikisource? I poked around a bit and didn't see anything, and I'm not sure I entirely understand the decision. -- Beland 04:01, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

The data I remember seeing was some kind of immigration figures. I believe s:Wikisource:What Wikisource includes#Reference material has been partially updated, there is still some disscusion about the details. Basically if we had the entire report that include the immigration data we would accept it, but we are not accepting unaffiliated reference material. The original disscussion can be found at s:Wikisource:Scriptorium/Archives/2006/04#Inclusion of reference data on Wikisource. I poked through my contributions for the past month, and I don't see anything being tagged for Wikisource, but I'll take your word for it. I think I see why wikisource considers reference material outside of its scope; probably you'll want to transfer that information to Wikibooks. -- Beland 15:58, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

United States immigration statistics was the article I removed the move to wikisource tag from. The history shows you created it and the tag was there in the earliest version. It was not yet moved to WS so I wanted to point it out to you since it seems you thought it did not belong on WP. Hi, I saw the sorting work you (your bot actually but hey) did on Category:Articles that need to be wikified. Great, it makes it much nicer this way. Is it also possible to this on Category:Articles to be merged. I just discovered this category today, and boy does it has a backlog. Sorting by month would be helpful there. We have created a new Wikiproject called Wikipedia:WikiProject:Urban studies and planning . The categorization system is having growing pains. There seem to be several different view about what our category system should be; a way to browse, an index of articles, a classification system, and/or a database search tool. Each of these views leads editors to different conclusions about how categories should be populated, and many conflicts result. To deal with these problems, Rick Block and I have been working on a proposal to add the ability to create category intersections. We think our proposal will address these problems and add some very useful new features. We are asking editors and developers concerned with categorizaton problems to take a look. Hi - I've proposed a wikipedia wide project to find and eliminate instances within infobox-style templates of the anti-accessible technique of creating multiple visual rows withn a single row by embedding matching HTML breaks in two (or more) adjacent columns in a table, please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Usability#Infobox accessibility issue. So far, no one has signed up or in any way acknowledged that this is a problem worth pursuing (screw them blind folks - who needs em!). In any event, if you could whip up a little analysis program to find likely instances (difficult to be exact, but perhaps references to templates with multiple parameters whose values include an HTML break - being exact requires either looking at the rendered HTML or interpreting the template) it might help folks realize the magnitude of the problem. I'm pretty sure this is very widespread, and I've verified with a blind wikipedia user that it is a problem. If you could help, I'd appreciate it. -- Rick Block (talk) 04:13, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Hey Beland,

I was looking at Pearle, and it said you can generate reports showing the tree structure of categories, including articles. Does this include a report of how long the article in the categories are?

I ask because I used to use CatScan all the time. I spend a lot of time working on Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs, which has a huge amount of short stub articles. CatScan was really useful in identifying and listing stub articles, and I liked being able to start with the shortest, most incomplete articles first.

However, CatScan hasn't worked in many months (since April 11th!), and it appears permanantly offline on en.wikipedia. Is it possible for you to use Pearle to come up with a list of the shortest articles in Category:Dinosaurs, preferably sorted by size? The category depth would have to be about six, because there are around six levels of depth. Can it be done? I can use pop-ups, but it takes hours because there are between 1,200 and 2,000 dinosaur articles; I've only sorted letter A, and am not relishing the thought of B thru Z.
