The Porsche 924 was a sports car automobile sold as Porsche AG's entry-level model between 1976 and 1988.

In January 1972 Volkswagen Group comissioned Porsche to design a successor for their joint venture the 914 sports car. The new model, codenamed EA-425, was to be marketed as an Audi.
The 924, and 928 developed in parallel, broke with Porsche's design tradition. The new models had water-cooled engines that ran quieter than Porsche's air-cooled boxers to meet increasingly tough emissions requirements. They were FR layout with a transaxle to spread the weight evenly over front and rear axles, giving neutral handling compared to the 40:60 rear bias of the RR Porsche 911 .
To keep costs down the 924 used as many existing Volkswagen components as possible including the engine the 2.0 L 4 cylinder unit...
By 1975 the Audi plant at Neckarsulm was tooling up to produce the EA-425. However, given the decline in the sports car market following the 1973 oil crisis and the success of the Scirocco, launched in 1974, Volkswagen cancelled the EA-425.

Between 1976 and 1985 around 121,000 examples of the base model were produced.
The engine combined the cylinder block from the Audi inline-4, found in the Audi 100 C1 saloon and the original Volkswagen LT van, with Porsche designed 8-valve SOHC head, inlet and exhaust manifolds. Porsche also replaced the standard engine's carburetor with Bosch CIS K-Jetronic fuel injection. With 1984 cc capacity the engine's maximum power and torque were 92 kW / 125 hp (DIN) at 5800 rpm and 165 Nm / 125.5 lb/ft at 3500 rpm respectively. Cars exported to the USA were detuned to meet emissions regulations.
The standard Audi 4-speed manual gearbox was upgraded to 5-speed in 1980, a 3-speed automatic was available from 1977.
Apart from minor improvements to the suspension, brakes and trim the 924 was largely unchanged over its 9 years in production.
