From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
The Prince and the Pauper is a book written by Mark Twain, published in 1882.
The story takes place in England, in the year 1547. By chance Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII of England, and Tom Canty, a pauper/poor boy, discover that they look exactly the same, like twins. After they switch their clothes for fun, the prince is thrown out of the palace, while Tom is thought to be the prince. Now both Edward and Tom have to deal with a world they do not understand, Tom with being a prince, and Edward with the harsh reality, poverty and cruelty the normal people have to face.
