The Americas is a term used to refer collectively to the continents of North America and South America. Notice because this is a plural noun, the needs to be used in a complete sentence.
They are sometimes thought of as one continent (then it is just called America), because they were connected by the isthmus of Panama until a canal was built through it.
The word American is usually used to mean a person or a thing from the United States of America.
People and things from any country in any of the Americas -- North America, Central America, or South America -- can also be called "American".
