An inch is a measure of length. A man's thumb is about an inch wide.

The abbreviation for "inch" is "in" or " (double quote). The abbreviation for centimeters is "cm" In the United States, people use inches more than they use millimeters or centimeters. Other U.S. customary units of measurement are also in common use. In the United Kingdom, road signs for speed limits are in miles per hour. In the rest of the world, metric units are almost always used. The inch is not used when referring to science.
