Guantanamo Bay
From Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia written in simple English for easy reading.
Guantanamo Bay is a bay. It is located in the south of the island of Cuba. Part of it is controlled by the United States. They took control over it in 1903, under a treaty between the United States and Cuba. The current government of Cuba does not see this treaty as legal. They say it violates International law (more specifically, the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, of 1969).
The southern part of the bay is surrounded by a naval base of the United States. This base is currently used as a Concentration camp for people captured by American forces in their operations in Afghanistan and Iraq (although some prisoners are abducted from other countries, like Britain and France, which is technically illegal) Some people say that the prisoners do not get the status and the rights as Prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions. Also the laws of the United States do not apply to them, and they are not given basic rights.
