The user will get a preview or demo of the software for free. So the user can decide if he likes the program or not before buying the full program.
You can get cool games for free this way such as Doom but sometimes they do not have all the levels. Sometimes Internet Relay Chat clients let you have a demo of their client for 30 days, but after that to keep using it, you have to pay money.
