Russia is a country in Europe and Asia. By land area, it is the largest country in the world. Russia's population (the number of all people living in the country) is about 144,000,000. The Russian Federation is another name of Russia.
Russia is now a democratic country with a president chosen in direct elections. The official language is Russian. The capital and the biggest city is Moscow. The second biggest city is Saint Petersburg. The most important cities (population is over 1,000,000) of Russia: Novosibirsk, Nizhniy Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Omsk, Kazan, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Rostov, Perm.
From 1922 to 1991 Russia was the largest unit in the Soviet Union, or the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). People sometimes used the name "Russia" for the whole Soviet Union. In reality, Russia was only one of 15 Soviet Socialist Republics. Before then, it was ruled by a czar, or king.
The Soviet Union broke apart in 1991.
The most common religion in Russia is Christianity. Christians in Russia have their own special type of church. It is called the Russian Orthodox Church.
