The Maldives are a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. They are located off the southwest coast of India.
The eleven hundred islands that make up the country are on twenty-six atolls. People live in about two hundred of them.
Malé is the capital, with eighty-one thousand people.
With its highest point at little more than two metres, it is the flattest country in the world.
