Transnistria, officially Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica, PMR (short form: Pridnestrovie) is an unrecognised country in Eastern Europe. The "nation" (though most countries do not consider it one) has been de facto independent from Moldova since September 2, 1990, when it made a declaration of independence and, aided by groups of Russian, Cossack and Ukrainian volunteers, and the 14th Russian (formerly Soviet) Army, defeated Moldovan forces, in the War of Transnistria. While there has been peace since 1992, the Council of Europe recognises Transnistria as a "frozen conflict" region. Whether it is a country or not is an issue of contention. The region continues to say it is independent and acts independently over its territory with the help of peacekeeping forces from four countries.

In an election (referendum) vote in September 17 2006 the people voted 97% to be free from Moldova. This vote has not been accepted by Moldova.
