Zhvil (Hasidic dynasty)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Zvhil (Zvyahel) is a Hasidic dynasty which originated with Rabbi Moshe of Zvhil, the son of Rabbi Yechiel Michael, the Magid (Preacher) of Zlotchov. As in several inter-related Hasidic dynasties, family tradition held that Rabbi Moshe was a descendant of King David. He was the great-grandson of Rabbi Menachem Nochum of Tschernobl (the first Maggid of Tschernobl) and Rabbi Aharon of Karlin. Rabbi Moshe was the grandson of Rabbi Mordechai of Tschernobl (the Maggid of Tschernobl) and Rabbi Yitzchok of Drovitch.
Rabbi Moshe passed away in 1831 and was succeeded by his son Rabbi Mordechai. The last Rebbe to reside in Zvhil was Grand Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel, grandfather of the present Zvhil - Mezbuz Rebbe of Boston, Grand Rabbi Yitzhak Aharon Korff. Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel was also the Tsar-appointed Chief Rabbi of the Ukraine.
The original town of Zvyahel is located today in the Ukraine and is known as Novograd Volynski. The custom to call themselves Zvhil instead of Zvyahel can be attributed to several reasons: 1) similarity between Zvhil and Zvul (one of the holy names for the ancient Jewish Temple in Hebrew), 2) a matter of difficulty to write the Ukrainian word Zvyahel in English, or Hebrew.
Today there are three Zvhiller Rebbes, one in Jerusalem, one in Union City, New Jersey, and the Zvhil - Mezbuz Rebbe of Boston, MA.
