[edit] United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, a Z-car is the name given to some models of mid 20th-century police vehicles.
The name gained popularity when it was used in its plural form Z-Cars as the name of a 1960s television police show set in Liverpool.
The term comes from the model names of the cars used: Ford Zephyrs and Ford Zodiacs. These saloons were fast for their time, place, and cost.
[edit] Australia
In Australia, a zed-car is the name given to cars belonging to the Commonwealth (i.e., federal national) government. They are so named because the vehicle registration plates begins with a Z.
[edit] Cyprus
In Cyprus, zed car is the term given to a hire car, due to the registration plate beginning with a Z.
